Atlanta Braves Walkoff In Dramatic Fashion Against Giants, 9-8
The Atlanta Braves overcame a 6-0 deficit to beat the San Francisco Giants in dramatic fashion on Monday by a score of 9-8.
Third-baseman Adonis Garcia hit a walkoff 2-run homer off of Giants pitcher Ryan Vogelsong in the 12th inning of Monday’s game to give the Atlanta Braves their second consecutive win. Arodys Vizcaino notched his second win of the 2015 season after relieving Ross Detwiler in the top of the 12th.

Monday began in horrible fashion for the Atlanta Braves, as starting pitcher Mike Foltynewicz gave up solo home-runs to both Brandon Crawford and Brandon Belt in the second inning, giving the Giants an early 2-0 lead. The onslaught continued in 3rd inning, as once again Foltynewicz surrendered a 2-run shot to Giants catcher and Georgia native Buster Posey, scoring Nori Aoki and making the score 4-0. Brandon Crawford hit his second home-run of the game in the 4th — a 2-run blast off of Foltynewicz again, putting the Braves in a deep 6-0 hole.

To add insult to injury with a 6-0 deficit, Freddie Freeman departed the contest in the top of the 5th inning because of an apparent oblique injury. The Atlanta Braves are listing Freeman as day-to-day. Since returning from the Disabled List, Freeman has struggled, hitting only .200 in 10 games back.
Though the game at this point seemed out of reach for the listless Atlanta Braves, Jace Peterson continued his recent tear and power surge as he launched a 408 foot 3-run bomb off of Matt Cain, giving the Braves a chance with the score now at 6-3. Nick Markakis would add another run for the Bravos in the 6th, singling home Adonis Garcia and pulling the Braves to within two runs of the Giants. Chris Johnson, hitting for the injured Freddie Freeman, hit a solo shot in the bottom of the 7th inning, closing the score to 6-5.
“This victory will give the Braves a vital morale boost going into Game 2 of their series tomorrow.”
The Giants would add to their lead in the top of the 9th inning as Nori Aoki singled home Nehire Adrianza, putting the Atlanta Braves in a 7-5 hole. What then happened in the bottom of the 9th inning was nothing short of magical, especially on a night when the baseball gods seemed to smile on the Braves. Catcher A.J. Pierzynski tied the game at 7-7 with a 2-run homer off of Santiago Casilla with two outs, bringing the game into extra innings.

In the top of the 12th inning, Buster Posey singled home Kelby Tomlinson to give the Giants an 8-7 lead. Not to be outdone by Pierzynski’s game-tying homer in the 9th, minor-league journeyman Adonis Garcia once again proved his worth to the Atlanta Braves by providing the decisive blow in the game; a two-run homer off of Ryan Vogelsong to give the Braves a hard-fought and emotional victory.
After everything the Braves have gone through in the past week; from the 3 team trade with the Dodgers and Marlins, nearly being swept by the Phillies in Philadelphia, and the injuries to Andrelton Simmons and Freddie Freeman, this victory will give the Braves a vital morale boost going into Game 2 of their series tomorrow.
The Atlanta Braves won’t have long to savor this victory, however, as ace Shelby Miller toes the rubber tomorrow against Jake Peavy and the World Champions, with first pitch set for 7:10 PM.
