Mark Richt Holds All The Cards in UGA QB Battle

Mark Richt has done a fantastic job not tipping his hand as to whom ends up the becoming the next starting quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs.

The Georgia Bulldogs football program has not had this much uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position since Joe Tereshinski III lost his starting gig to true freshman Matthew Stafford after poor performance against Vanderbilt in 2006.

Georgia is coming off two-plus years of Matthew Stafford, one season of Joe Cox, four of Aaron Murray, and one with Hutson Mason under center.  For better or worse, Dawg Nation has known who their starting quarterback was well before the start of every season since 2007.  But 2015 is a very different situation.

  • Mark Richt has a serious QB competition on his hands between RS Sophomore Brice Ramsey, Junior Faton Bauta, and UVA Transfer Junior Greyson Lambert.  While many expect Ramsey to win the competition before camp concludes, Mark Richt and his new Offensive Coordinator hold all the cards in this tense poker game.  Both Richt and Schottenheimer don’t bluff.  They know who’s going to win the competition, but why would they tell us if they don’t absolutely have to?

If I were in their shoes, I wouldn’t say a word until the team comes back from Nashville, hopefully after a strong road performance against East rival Vanderbilt Commodores.  That way the Head Ball Coach up in Sakerlina Steve Spurrier will have to game plan for three quarterbacks instead of one in their Week 3 matchup in Sanford Stadium.

By keeping all external parties in the dark, Mark Richt and his staff can continue to keep opposing defensive coordinators up at night game planning for when they have to play the #9 ranked Georgia Bulldogs this season with three potential quarterbacks leading the Dawgs on Saturdays.

Will Brice Ramsey win and unleash his cannon of an arm?  Or is it the dual threat, efficient passing vocal leader Faton Bauta commanding the Dawgs in the huddle?  Or could Greyson Lambert come to UGA and have the upper hand with more in-game experience than both of his competitors combined?

Expect Mark Richt to play all three considerably in both Week 1 against the ULM Warhawks and in Week 2 against the Vanderbilt Commodores before a firm public decision on likely Monday, September 13th.  All three will get multiple opportunities to win the job working with the first team.

I hope that Bauta, Lambert, and Ramsey strive to bring out the best in each other.  That way the whole Georgia team wins as the best player rises to the top, while number two and three continue to push all season long if something were to happen to the starter.

However Mark Richt decides who ultimately earns the starting gig, just remember that UGA is in good shape with three passers that could start at many Power 5 schools in the country.  Depth is a great luxury to have.  Go Dawgs!
