Georgia Bulldogs Benefit From Distraction Free Summer
By John Buhler
The Georgia Bulldogs football program has undergone a slight culture change since 2014, coinciding with the change of guard at both coordinator jobs. Jeremy Pruitt took over the defense prior to last season after leading the Florida State Seminoles defense to a National Title in 2013. Brian Schottenheimer brings years of NFL experience to an already sound pro-style offense in Athens this year.

But where the culture change is most obvious is in the overall attitude of the Georgia Bulldogs players. We don’t have to do anything superstitious anymore because fall camp is already underway because UGA finally had a distraction-free summer for Mark Richt. Georgia won’t have to play with one arm tied behind its back when South Carolina comes to town on September 19th for the Savannah River Showdown.

Dawn of the Dawg
It became almost a running joke that the Georgia Bulldogs would lead the SEC in offseason arrests, academic suspensions, and dumb off-the-field injuries every summer. Thankfully, that didn’t happen in Summer 2015. Outside of a minor leg injury with WR Justin Scott-Wesley, the Georgia Bulldogs entered fall camp with little to no limitations on its full roster.
So how do the Georgia Bulldogs build off arguably the best offseason in the Mark Richt Era? Hunker down in the August Georgia Heat and practice with passion. Georgia only gets 29 practices before their first game against the ULM Warhawks on September 5th. We’re officially less than a month away from teeing it up Between The Hedges!
By having the team at full strength entering camp, Richt can allow maximum competition to ensue at positions like quarterback, center, and even at wide receiver. Having everybody giving it their all from now until September 5th will only benefit the entire program. The best players will rise to the top and assume starting roles, while the reserves fight for playing time, ultimately improving the team’s depth in the process.

I can sense that the 2015 Georgia Bulldogs are a more mature team already than ones I’ve fallen in love with in the past. Everybody is choosing to put the team first ahead of any personal accolades or achievement. Leaders like RB Nick Chubb and OLB Jordan Jenkins are excellent role models both on and off the field for this year’s team. Guys like LT John Theus and WR Malcolm Mitchell are developing into strong senior leaders as well.

Many of us were waiting all summer for the hammer to fall on some humiliating distraction to come from the Georgia Bulldogs football program, but nothing ever manifested. Dawg Nation can breathe now. Camp is here and Saturdays in Athens are just around the corner.
Though something injury-related could happen at camp, I’m okay with it because it’s part of the game of football. But with this year’s squad’s abundance of maturity, I’m certain that the Dawgs will hit the field running in Week 1 against the ULM Warhawks as the program strives to have its best season in the Mark Richt Era. Go Dawgs!
