Manny Banuelos to Miss Start on Friday
By John Buhler
Manny Banuelos will miss his start on Friday against the New York Mets due to elbow discomfort. He will seek consultation from Dr. James Andrews next week.
Manny Banuelos has had an injury-riddled last few seasons of professional baseball. He had to undergo Tommy John surgery and missed the entire 2014 season while he was with the New York Yankees organization.

After being acquired by the Atlanta Braves, no matter how cautious the team is with its young southpaw, the guy just can’t seem to stay healthy. Manny Banuelos will miss his scheduled start on Friday against the New York Mets.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s David O’Brien reports that the Atlanta Braves will send Banuelos on another consultation visit with Dr. James Andrews, the man who performed Manny’s Tommy John. Last month, the two met while Manny was rehabbing down in Orlando and Andrews allowed Banuelos to continue pitching, siting no structural damage to the surgically repaired elbow.

Though the Atlanta Braves organization believe Dr. Andrews’ words about Banuelos’ elbow having no structural damage, they have their concerns because Manny has experienced pain in his elbow that has not subsided since his most recent start. Atlanta will likely send out either Matt Wisler, Sugar Ray Marimon or Edwin Jackson as the starter for the Braves in the Friday night series opener against the New York Mets.
Initially I didn’t understand why the New York Yankees organization would part ways with a promising left-handed pitching prospect like Manny Banuelos. Atlanta gave up RHP David Carpenter and LHP Chasen Shreve to acquire Banuelos this past offseason. However even under extreme caution with regard to his innings limit, Manny Banuelos has been unable to stay healthy for the Atlanta Braves.
When Banuelos starts he rarely makes it out of the fifth inning. Perhaps that’s by design to slowly work him back to full strength, but it’s tough to know that the bullpen will work at least four innings in every Manny Banuelos start. We’ve seen the Atlanta humidity get the best of him on at least two occasions. Even with tremendous stuff and a high ceiling as a Major League pitcher, maybe the Braves did rush back Manny Banuelos sooner than they should have?

For an organization that is stockpiling young pitching talent, outside of maybe Arodys Vizcaino in the back in of the bullpen, Braves Country hasn’t seen any of this high-upside talent click in 2015. It serves the Atlanta Braves organization in the long term to shut down Manny Banuelos for the rest of 2015. While he could start a few more times, it’s more important for the Atlanta Braves to have him back at full strength for Spring Training in 2016.
