The Atlanta Braves fresh off a rare road series victory will test their luck against the NL East leading New York Mets for a four-game set at Turner Field.

Our 2015 Atlanta Braves did seemingly the impossible, winning not one, but two road games en route to a series victory over their division rival Philadelphia Phillies.  At 56-84 on the year, Atlanta survived impending doom and are not in last place in the National League East.  Fourth place!  Fourth place!

  • New York enters play at 78-61, with a 7-game cushion over the second place Washington Nationals.  With arguably the deepest starting rotation in baseball and newly acquired big boppers at the plate, the New York Mets have a strong chance of playing for a National League Pennant this October.

Tonight’s starters are the hapless Shelby Miller (5-13, 2.81 ERA) for the Braves and the ageless wonder that is Bartolo Colon (13-11, 4.18 ERA).  Miller gets no love from the Atlanta Braves bats in his starts, still winless since May 17th.  Colon is always entertaining, but usually handles the Atlanta Braves in his starts.  It has the making of an interesting game to say the least.

We don’t know who will take the place of rookie Manny Banuelos in Friday’s contest, but whomever takes his spot in the rotation will have to go against rookie Steven Matz (2-0, 1.89 ERA).  Matz has made the Mets rotation even deeper, pressing for starts on a contending team.  Either Matt Wisler, Edwin Jackson, or Sugar Ray Marimon will start in the place of Banuelos who is seeking counsel from Dr. James Andrews about discomfort in his throwing elbow.

On Saturday, the Atlanta Braves will send the struggling Williams Perez (5-6, 5.42 ERA) up against Odin’s son Thor, Noah Syndergaard (8-6, 3.31 ERA).  It’s a tale of two rookies in this one.  Perez had a strong start to his 2015 campaign before taking a line drive off the leg in Pittsburgh derailed his season.  Syndergaard seems to have found his groove out there on the mound for the New York Mets.  He’s been the top prospect in the Mets organization for some time.  Let’s see what he’s got on Saturday.

In the series finale, rookie Ryan Weber (0-1, 3.00 ERA) makes his second career start versus crafty left-hander Jon Niese (8-10, 4.36 ERA).  Weber impressed in his debut with his strong mound presence that hopefully ignited the rest of the young Atlanta Braves staff.  Jon Niese is often viewed as the forgotten man in the New York Mets rotation, but he’s usually a tough get for the Braves when these two rivals clash.

Winning two of three and coming home might put the Atlanta Braves in good spirits for this four-game weekend series, but it’s the New York Mets and they’re the 2015 Atlanta Braves.  Could Atlanta split with New York in this series?  Possibly, especially since Atlanta somehow misses both Matt Harvey and Jacob deGrom in this extended series.  Thank goodness for that six-man rotation of Terry Collins‘ club!  Go Braves!
