Georgia Bulldogs: RBs and D the Key against Vandy, Win 31-14
By John Buhler
The Georgia Bulldogs knock off SEC East rival Vanderbilt in Nashville 31-14 Saturday afternoon. UGA moves to 2-0 with a win in their SEC opener versus a tough Vanderbilt defense.
In the last four seasons, Georgia has not looked strong against the ‘Dores despite going 2-1 in Nashville in their last three road appearances. Although Georgia won 31-14, the score line did not tell the full story.

UGA struggled moving the ball through the air when QB Greyson Lambert was under center. The Georgia Bulldogs relied heavily on their running game to move the ball on offense. Nick Chubb once again had over 100 yards on the ground, proving himself one of the best backs in college football, and the primary offensive threat for the Bulldogs.

Georgia also relied on true sophomore RB Sony Michel to move the offense against VU HC Derek Mason’s improved defense. The yards on the ground accumulated by UGA were hard-earned. Vanderbilt’s defense has made big strides under Derek Mason, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Vanderbilt upset a team or two in Conference Play this year.
The quarterback play of Greyson Lambert was concerning as he was unable to convert on many key passes for the Georgia Bulldogs. For Georgia to effectively move the ball this year, Lambert will have to show the ability to convert on third down. He played against a better defensive team this week, but he needs to grow into the role quickly to ensure success for the Dawgs.

Defensively, OLB Jordan Jenkins played inspired football today. He likely remembered the Ramik Wilson Targeting Game of 2013 and often could be found on top of VU QB Johnny McCrary. When OLB Lorenzo Carter received a targeting penalty in the first half, you could see Jenkins elevate his play on the outside to counterbalance the loss of Carter.
Sony Michel looked like the 5-star recruit UGA signed out of Plantation, FL today, as he and Nick Chubb were the workhorses for the Dawgs offense against the improved Vandy front seven. Despite not being the starting RB, often see Sony Michel broke plays in space as the change-of-pace back for the Georgia Bulldogs.
Overall, the Georgia Bulldogs pulled off a solid SEC win over rival Vanderbilt, but there are still question marks with the team offensively going forward. If Greyson Lambert plays like he did against ULM, UGA should defeat South Carolina at home next week. However, there’s a lot about the Dawgs to question going forward.
