Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets: #14 Ranking Too Low for Tech?

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are ranked 14th in the most recent AP College Football Poll.

As the Yellow Jackets begin to prepare for their first test of the season against #8 Notre Dame on Saturday in South Bend, Indiana, the most recent AP Poll has some Tech fans understandably bewildered and upset that teams like UGA and LSU are ranked in the Top 10 after mediocre showings while the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are only at 14. Here is the most recent AP Poll:

Of course, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have yet to play an opponent that merits a significant rise in the rankings, but against both Tulane and Alcorn State, the Jackets scored an aggregate 134 total points against those teams. Completely routing two over-matched opponents has to have some value, or having one of the best quarterbacks in the country that runs a dynamic offense should mean something too, right?

Apparently it does not hold as much value as playing in the SEC, where the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets saw their rival UGA rise up to #7 after struggling for much of Saturday in what was essentially a home game on the road for the Bulldogs against Vanderbilt. Personally, I’m a little disappointed at these rankings because while it is true that the Jackets still have yet to “prove” themselves, they still have shown what their team is capable of doing on any given Saturday — albeit against lesser opponents.

Isn’t that what you’re supposed to do in college football? Take care of business when you’re supposed to? Now this is not a bash UGA post, but when you look at the struggles of Grayson Lambert so far at QB for the Bulldogs, and the speculation that Brice Ramsey may start to see more playing time, you have to ask yourself why is UGA ranked twice as high as a Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets team that has more offensive weapons (Nick Chubb is really good though), a premier quarterback, and is without any questions surrounding their offense?

Of course, ranking college football teams is above my paygrade, and with Notre Dame (without QB Malik Zaire and RB Tarrean Folston), Clemson and Florida State on the horizon for the Jackets, they will have the opportunity to prove themselves to their naysayers. We’ll see what happens over the course of the next couple of weeks.
