The Atlanta Hawks return to Athens, GA for the first part of training camp marks the third consecutive season in which they’ve done so. The Hawks also announced that the first day of camp, September 29th, will be their annual media day where players and coach will field questions from the media and team pictures will be taken.

It’s hard to believe that the start of the Atlanta Hawks training camp is only two weeks away. This year’s training camp will feature some intriguing positional battles for a roster spot.

Former second round pick Lamar Patterson will compete with former Nebraska swingman and Las Vegas Summer League teammate Terran Petteway for a roster spot, while veteran guard Jason Richardson joins the squad to secure a place on the Atlanta Hawks depth chart.

In addition to Patterson, Petteway, Richardson and other non-roster invitees vying for a spot on the Atlanta Hawks roster, other questions still surround the team. Following Mike Scott‘s arrest in early August for possession of illegal substances and evading arrest in a high speed vehicular chase, the Hawks still must decide on what to do with Scott. He has yet to be realized, and the Atlanta Hawks have yet to address this issue with nothing more than an innocuous PR statement.

If Mike Scott is in fact released (which is almost a certainty at this point), it will create another roster spot for one of the aforementioned players. It will be interesting to see in what direction the Atlanta Hawks front-office goes in regard to this issue.

The start of training camp will also provide the Atlanta Hawks with the opportunity to assess how Kyle Korver and Thabo Sefolosha are recovering from their late season injuries. Kyle Korver injured his ankle in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers when PG Matthew Dellavedova dove into Korver’s ankle with reckless abandon trying to secure a loose ball.

Thabo Sefolosha will be returning this season from a season ending injury suffered at the hands of the NYPD in April, following an altercation outside a Soho nightclub. With Sefolosha projected to be the starting Small Forward, replacing DeMarre Carroll in the Atlanta Hawks starting lineup, it is of the utmost importance to evaluate his health. The season is about to begin, Hawks fans, and I couldn’t be more excited.
