Georgia Bulldogs: Favorites to Win SEC?

The Georgia Bulldogs have established themselves as the clear front-runner in the SEC East divisional race entering Week 4 of the College Football season.

Georgia sits comfortably at #7 in the AP Top 25 Poll entering the 4th Week of the regular season. #25 Missouri and the winner of this weekend’s Tennessee vs. Florida game will likely be the two biggest threats from keeping the Georgia Bulldogs from winning the SEC East.

Though Missouri, Florida and Tennessee aren’t out of the East race yet, the gap between Georgia at one and the next team at two is too vast to consider anybody other than UGA winning the East entering the final Week of September.

In the West, it’s too early to tell, as the Gauntlet that is that division is a long way from being settled. Both Alabama and Auburn lost in Week 3 to West Division foes that are now in the Top 10, #3 Ole Miss and #8 LSU. Texas A&M is quietly playing sound football at #14.

With four teams in the West in the Top 25 (#3 Ole Miss, #8 LSU, #12 Alabama, #14 Texas A&M) and the winner of this weekend’s Mississippi State vs. Auburn game still barely in the mix to win the division, we can’t say with any confidence who the front-runner of the SEC West is entering Week 4 of the season.

So with UGA appearing head and shoulders better than their SEC East division rivals and the SEC West still very much in flux, are the Georgia Bulldogs now the favorite to win the SEC and make the 2nd Annual College Football Playoff?

Entering Week 4, the Dawgs schedule isn’t as daunting as we originally thought. The only two SEC teams on their slate that are still undefeated are #25 Missouri and 3-0 Florida. Mizzou’s light schedule will allow the Tigers to enter their Week 7 matchup with Georgia probably 6-0, assuming they beat Kentucky in Lexington.

  • This means that Alabama, Auburn, and Tennessee all lost. Both Auburn and Tennessee could have multiple losses on the year before the Dawgs come to their respective campuses. Alabama likely will come to Athens as the underdog. While UGA’s path to Atlanta is the clearest of any team in the SEC, Georgia still has to play well to win the East.

What makes them now the favorite to win the SEC is that we can’t pick favorite to win the West entering Week 4. Can Ole Miss keep it together the entire season? Is Leonard Fournette truly a Heisman contender for the LSU Tigers? Is Texas A&M the team we all should fear? Does Alabama have something to say about this? Do Auburn, Arkansas, or Mississippi State have anything to say about this?

Being able to visualize the Georgia Bulldogs in the 2015 SEC Championship Game this early when no other program in the Conference can realistically say that entering the final week of September gives the Dawgs the edge. Your #7 Georgia Bulldogs are now the favorites to win the SEC and make the Playoff entering Week 4.
