The Atlanta Hawks have signed former Philadelphia 76ers draft pick Arsalan Kazemi to a training camp deal, the AJC’s Chris Vivlamore reports.

Vivlamore reported on Monday evening that the Atlanta Hawks and Arsalan Kazemi were working out a deal. The Philadelphia 76ers cut ties with Kazemi, making him a free agent. Drafted by the 76ers in the second round of 2013, Arsalan Kazemi, a native of Iran, played internationally last season in China. Collegiately, Kazemi played at Rice before finishing his college career at Oregon.

Known as a rebounder, Arsalan Kazemi played for the Philadelphia 76ers Las Vegas Summer League team this past July, and averaged 3.2 points per game and 7.6 rebounds in over 27 minutes per contest. With the Atlanta Hawks being one of the more deficient rebounding teams in the NBA, it is understandable why the front-office would at the very least take a look at an effective rebounder.

Arsalan Kazemi will face stiff competition if he is to secure the final roster spot on the Atlanta Hawks out of training camp. Lamar Patterson and Terran Petteway seem to have the inside track for the final roster spot (if the Hawks even decide to have a 15th player).

Regardless of the battle for the 15th spot on the Hawks’ roster, Arsalan Kazemi is nonetheless an intriguing player to assess as the Atlanta Hawks begin training camp today at the University of Georgia. His 6’8” frame would provide depth at the 3 or the 4 at the end of the bench, and his international roots make him an interesting piece.

In other training camp news today, Chris Vivlamore reported that PG Shelvin Mack (who underwent offseason shoulder surgery) was able to play for most of today’s practice, while both Kyle Korver and Thabo Sefolosha were at 50-75 percent in regard to their ability to practice. Mack, Korver and Sefolosha were all medically cleared to resume basketball activities last week following season ending injuries last season.

After yesterday’s media day, the Atlanta Hawks are focusing on improving as a club and working towards returning to the Eastern Conference Finals. The battle for the starting SF position will be especially intriguing, and it will be great to see who (if any) player is able to secure the final roster spot on the Atlanta Hawks for the 2015-2016 season.
