Terran Petteway: Hawks Release Forward
The Atlanta Hawks have released swingman Terran Petteway on Thursday in a move that indicates that Lamar Patterson has all but secured the 15th and final roster spot.
Terran Petteway, a former standout at Nebraska that led his team to the NCAA tournament, went undrafted in this year’s NBA draft. Petteway was played sparingly throughout the preseason, only appearing in 3 games while recording almost 22 minutes on the court. Terran Petteway only scored 5 points during the preseason.

During the Las Vegas Summer League, Terran Petteway was a standout on the Hawks squad, averaging 10.9 points and 4.3 rebounds per contest. Possessing the capability of shooting from beyond the arc, Petteway became an intriguing prospect for the Atlanta Hawks going into Training Camp and the preseason, and looked as one of the top 2 candidates to secure the 15th and final roster spot on the Hawks.

After releasing Terran Petteway, the Hawks’ roster has 17 players, including non-roster invitees Earl Barron, DeQuan Jones and Lamar Patterson. Jones and Barron have also played limited minutes during the exhibition schedule, and likely will depart in the coming days as the regular season approaches.
Lamar Patterson is the only non-roster invitee to receive significant playing this preseason, and looks to have the best chance of making the Atlanta Hawks roster. Patterson, Jones, Petteway and Barron all received DNP-CD’s on Wednesday against the Memphis Grizzlies.
Atlanta Hawks Head Coach Mike Budenholzer praised Terran Petteway after his release, as reported by the AJC’s Chris Vivlamore. Budenholzer stated,
"“He has been great, I think he’s a good young player. I hope the best for him. We’ll definitely keep an eye on him.”"

Though Terran Petteway was unsuccessful in his attempt to make the Hawks opening day roster, he will become a free agent and will most likely find opportunities elsewhere. As Coach Bud stated, the Hawks are intrigued by his skill-set, and some more seasoning and NBA development can benefit Petteway going forward. In all likelihood, an NBA D-League Team will sign Petteway, affording him the opportunity to gain more experience this year.
On Wednesday, Mike Budenholzer tightened the Hawks’ rotation to 10-men, giving fans a glimpse of what they will likely see throughout the season. Though Lamar Patterson will probably make the team, I don’t expect him to dress for most contests and should see time in the D-League throughout the year. The regular season begins on October 27th against the Detroit Pistons at Philips Arena.
