Atlanta Hawks Win Nail-Biter in Charlotte, 94-92

The Atlanta Hawks won a sloppy game on Sunday against the Charlotte Hornets at Time Warner Cable Arena by a final score of 94-92.

Kent Bazemore led the way for the Atlanta Hawks with 20 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals on Sunday, while Jeff Teague added 18 points with 4 assists. Kent Bazemore is starting to assert himself as a legitimate offensive weapon for the Hawks, and is seamlessly fitting into the starting lineup. The starting lineup remained balanced scoring-wise, with Paul Millsap and Al Horford both recording 16 points a piece. Kyle Korver was off against the Hornets on Sunday, scoring only 6 points on 3 of 9 shooting.

Throughout the game, the Atlanta Hawks were plagued by sloppy play, totalling 11 turnovers during the game against the Hornets. These turnovers allowed Charlotte to not only keep the game competitive, but gain a lead during the third quarter and bring that into the fourth quarter.

The Atlanta Hawks outscored the Hornets 24-16 in the fourth quarter, helping Mike Budenholzer’s team secure the road victory. Kemba Walker led the Hornets in scoring on Sunday against the Hawks with 17 points, while former Hawk Marvin Williams played impressively, scoring 16 points, including 5 three-pointers on 8 attempts.

The game came down to the final seconds, even though it should not have. Marvin Williams banked in a three-pointer with 12 seconds left, narrowing the Atlanta Hawks’ lead to 2 points. On the ensuing possession, the Atlanta Hawks tried to inbound a pass with 8 seconds left, the Hornets tried to gain possession of the ball and called a time-out they did not have. Head official Joey Crawford missed the play, leading to a jump-ball where Charlotte gained possession. Kemba Walker missed a jump shot at the end of regulation, sealing a victory for the Atlanta Hawks.

The Atlanta Hawks are now 3-1 heading into their road matchup against the Miami Heat on Tuesday; but it’s clear that the team has many problems right now. Sloppy play on the offensive end will not help their cause against a good Heat team. The Hawks also only shot 42 percent on Sunday in Charlotte. On the bright side, Mike Budenholzer’s team out-rebounded the Hornets 48-45 — the first time they’ve won a rebounding battle this season.

The Atlanta Hawks also mixed and matched their new uniform set for the first time against the Hornets. Let’s hope this is final time they are experiment with two different colors.

As the season progresses, the Atlanta Hawks have work to do in order to regain their regular season form from last season. In they can continue to develop chemistry and move the ball effectively, the team should once again contend for a top spot in the Eastern Conference.
