The Atlanta Hawks were unable to defend the perimeter well Sunday afternoon versus the New York Knicks, falling 111-97 in Madison Square Garden.

The Atlanta Hawks could not contain sharpshooter Arron Afflalo, as he had a season-high 38 points for the New York Knicks, falling at Madison Square Garden, 111-97 Sunday afternoon.

While the Atlanta Hawks shot decently from the field (44.6%) and from beyond the arc (34.8%) as a team, it was not enough to keep pace with the blistering hot shooting of the New York Knicks on Sunday afternoon. New York shot 51.2% from the field and 44.0% from three in their first win over the Atlanta Hawks this season.

Though Paul Millsap recorded another double-double for the Atlanta Hawks, with 19 points and 10 rebounds, his stellar play wasn’t anywhere close to what Arron Afflalo did for the Knicks. Afflalo was 14-17 shooting, including 7-8 from three en route to his season-best 38 points. While New York had three other starters in double figures scoring (Carmelo Anthony, Kristaps Porzingis, and Robin Lopez), Afflalo was the difference in Sunday afternoon’s game between the Atlanta Hawks and the New York Knicks.

More from Atlanta Hawks

Atlanta had six players in double-digits scoring, including all five starters. Kyle Korver ended his rough slump from outside the perimeter, shooting 2-3 from three to get 13 points. Al Horford had 13 points on 5-8 shooting, including a three-pointer.

Jeff Teague had 11 points and four assists. Kent Bazemore continues to shoot the ball tremendously well as a starter. He had 18 points on 6-13 shooting, including 4-7 from long distance. Shelvin Mack had a nice 10 points and five assists coming off the Atlanta Hawks’ bench. Again, backup point guard Dennis Schroder didn’t play. It has been almost a week since Schroder has seen the floor for the Atlanta Hawks. This is something to keep an eye on for sure.

Fortunately, the Atlanta Hawks will have little time to avenge Sunday afternoon’s road loss to the New York Knicks. Atlanta will have a day of practice tomorrow back in Atlanta before hosting the same New York Knicks for a Tuesday evening tipoff at 8:00 PM ET.

Today was a perfect example of how even if a team is playing at a high level, that isn’t always good enough. Atlanta played well enough to win, but the strong shooting of the New York Knicks rarely gave the Atlanta Hawks an opportunity to cut the deficit to less than 10 points. Atlanta will try to beat the Knicks on Tuesday night, as they carry their 21-14 record into their next game. Let’s Go Hawks
