The Atlanta Hawks played arguably their worst game of the 2015-16 NBA season, as they were completely obliterated by the Charlotte Hornets, 107-84 Wednesday night.

The Atlanta Hawks go on to play possibly their worst game of the year in Charlotte Wednesday night, as the Southeast Division rival Hornets annihilated the Hawks, 107-84 at Time Warner Cable Arena. Atlanta had won the previous two meetings against Charlotte earlier this season, but had absolutely no answer for the Hornets’ perimeter game.

Charlotte hoisted up 40 three-point attempts (40!), sinking 13 of them in their blowout home victory over the Atlanta Hawks. The Hornets were going to end their seven-game losing streak at some point, so perhaps it does make sense that they would best a divisional opponent at home, a place where the Hornets were 13-7 entering Wednesday night’s game.

What made this game particularly frustrating was that the Atlanta Hawks were coming off arguably their best win of the season, when they defeated the Chicago Bulls, 120-105 Saturday night at Philips Arena. For a team that takes great pride and draws its competitiveness from playing the card game Uno, where was that drive Wednesday night? Charlotte dominated all 48 minutes of this basketball game.

More from Atlanta Hawks

The only player on the Atlanta Hawks who had double figures in scoring was none other than sensational power forward Paul Millsap. Millsap had 20 of the Atlanta Hawks’ 84 points Wednesday night. Nobody else on the club had more than nine points.

Paul Millsap was also the only player on the Hawks to shoot better than 50% from the field, as he connected on seven of his 12 shot attempts. The only other player on the Atlanta Hawks to hit 50% of his shots was backup guard Shelvin Mack, who had eight points on 3-6 shooting in roughly 10 minutes of playing time.

While we all want to believe that this year’s Atlanta Hawks team can recapture the magic of the 2014-15 club, this 2015-16 team is far too streaky to see it doing as well as the team did last season. We see flashes of brilliance against strong opponents like the Chicago Bulls on Saturday, but on the other hand will see games like the one we had to endure tonight against the Charlotte Hornets.

Atlanta will have Thursday off, as the Hawks will travel to Milwaukee to face another struggling Eastern Conference team in the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday night. Hopefully the Atlanta Hawks got enough bad play out of their system before they take the hardwood in Milwaukee.
