The Georgia Bulldogs never really had their chance against what is likely the best team in the SEC in the Texas A&M Aggies, falling at home Saturday, 79-45.

Sometimes you play a team that is simply better than you and the score of the game indicates those discrepancies easily. The Georgia Bulldogs had their opportunity to play spoiler in upsetting the No. 15 Texas A&M Aggies Saturday afternoon at home, but were hopelessly outclassed by a great A&M team, 79-45.

Georgia falls to 9-6 on the year and 2-3 in SEC play. It wasn’t like UGA was remotely favored to win the game, but losing this badly to a team in conference play jeopardizes the program’s fleeting chances of getting back to the Big Dance in 2016.

The Georgia Bulldogs shot an abysmal 28.3% from the field on 15-53 shooting. UGA’s only player to have double figures in scoring was power forward Yante Maten. Maten led the Dawgs with 11 points on 4-13 shooting with six rebounds.

While Texas A&M missed some free throws (10-15 from the line), the Aggies were spectacular from the field and from long distance, connecting on 52.7% (29-55) of their shots and were 50% from three (11-22).

Usually it is the Georgia Bulldogs’ defense that throws the opposing offense off their game. Texas A&M shot about as well as any team could have hoped to against the Dawgs on Saturday at the Stegeman Coliseum.

While Dawg Nation has yet to see what the Kentucky Wildcats or the South Carolina Gamecocks are about this season, I doubt that the Dawgs will see a better team than the one they were just decimated by in the Texas A&M Aggies, 15-2 on the year and 5-0 in SEC play.

This loss for the Georgia Bulldogs well certainly sting, not that it wasn’t largely expected, but it brings to light that this year’s team has a way to go before we can begin to think that it can stand as one of the five best teams in the SEC this year.

Georgia will have the next few days off before the Dawgs travel to Columbia, Missouri to take on a Missouri Tigers team that they have already beat 77-59. This was before the University of Missouri’s athletic department had to vacate all of 2013-14’s wins, two scholarships, and the right to play in the 2016 SEC Tournament or any other postseason bids for what went down in the final year of the Frank Haith era in Columbia.

The Georgia Bulldogs may have looked rough against the No. 15 Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday, but hopefully they can get to 10 wins and back to .500 in SEC play when they take on a sub-.500 Missouri Tigers team on Wednesday. Tipoff is at 7:00 PM ET at Mizzou Arena and the game will air on the SEC Network. Go Dawgs!
