The Atlanta Hawks have proved that they are in it to win the championship now. They have added some very important pieces and created a roster that can make some huge noise this season in the NBA.

With the Hawks looking to always add shooters, one of the best shooters in the league seems to be available. According to multiple reports, the Sacramento Kings are shopping Rudy Gay in hope that they will receive some nice role players. Will the Atlanta Hawks be one of the teams to look into acquiring Gay?

Contracts/Moving Parts

Whenever discussing a possible trade in any sport, looking at the contracts is one of the most important things. Gay is currently in the final year of a three year contract with the Kings, with an opt out after this season. Gay is making a little over 19 million this year, before he will opt out at the end of the season.

If the Atlanta Hawks want to take on that contract, they will have to unload some players in order to do that. Most likely, the Hawks would unload the contracts of Tiago Splitter and either Thabo Sefolosha or Mike Muscala. A combination of one or the other should give the Hawks room to add Gay.

Production/Fit

From a production standpoint, Gay has been one of the most athletic small forwards in the league. Last year, Gay averaged 17 points and over six rebounds a game. Those are great numbers for someone who will be 30 before the start of the season.

From a fit standpoint, Gay can come right in and give the Hawks a proven scorer on the wing. He could also mentor 1st round pick Taurean Prince in the process. Gay would also be a great threat from outside for Coach Bud’s team.

Analysis

Rudy Gay could put the Hawks over the top and get them back to the Eastern Conference Finals, where they were two years ago. Gay can help them also be an even better shooting team from the outside.
