Atlanta United FC, like many, are still trying to work out the kinks and wrinkles during pre-season play. They look to continue that trend against the Loons of Minnesota.

With flu season still lurking ominously like a Columbus Crew member during a Corner Kick, meaning with bad intentions, it is probably ill-timed to say that the coming Atlanta United FC season has the city near fever pitch. But it is apt. Last year, the City of Atlanta wowed veteran MLS watchers with a fervor and attendance that no one projected. Part of the lead up to those games that count this year is the pre-season and all that comes with it. Next in line is Minnesota.

Yes, we realize that the score line hasn’t been what one would hope for. Lackluster and sloppy play have been the vibe, with a (3-1) loss to Columbus a few days ago. When Josef Martinez is scoring own goals, you know it isn’t your day.

Reality is though, much like NFL Football, the pre-season games only matter in as much no one gets hurt, and the team can work out issues. So far, so good.

The 2nd half of the Columbus match looked far better for ATL UTD, and they look to continue the tightening up of play against the other 2nd year MLS team, Minnesota.

Ideally, we will begin to see the formidable formation of Almiron, Martinez, Nagbe, and Barco begin to gel with production and the possible return of 2017 favorites Parkhurst and Villalba. Parkhurst has played, but not really in form.

Wednesday’s match against the Loons should provide a clearer, more precise picture of what fans can expect come Opening Day.

It won’t be too long before that fever pitch becomes a mid-season roar.
