Angel Reese went home with the Defensive Player of the Year award this season, and it should come as no surprise if you watched what she was doing on that side of the ball. There may have been arguments for other players to win the award, but she had the strongest of them all.
Whether it was controlling the paint or coming out to the perimeter to guard, Reese could do almost everything on defense, and it made the Dream a better team because of it. She was No. 3 in steals this season, just behind Rhyne Howard and Jordin Canada, and they also showed their abillity to have an impact on defense.
Angel Reese is just getting started, and that's scary
Through three seasons in the league, Reese has already broken several records that came before her, and she's starting news just off her talent alone. She's been the best rebounder in the league since she was drafted, and her relentlessness on the offensive side of the ball is simply something you can't teach. The best thing for her was coming to the Dream this season, as head coach Karl Smesko continues to develop her game.
That's the scary thing about Reese. She hasn't even reached the peak of her skill level, and she's already breaking records and winning league awards. Some of the things that she had already been able to do were just amplified this season because she was on a winning team, and it helped the Dream get to where they are now. Still, there are some things that she can get better at that would make her even more dangerous as a player.
Angel Reese is already adding more things to her game
This season, Smesko made it a goal to get Reese to add a perimeter game to her bag of skills. It's been on and off this season, but she's shown that she's only getting better with time. She hit some big shots for the Dream, and it wouldn't be surprising if she continued to improve that part of her game.
Finishing more consistently at the rim is also something that Reese is only going to get better at with time. Against some of the bigger players at her position, being able to absorb contact and finish is important, and Reese will definitely need that if she wants to take her game to the next level.
What Reese has already been able to do three years into her career is impressive, but once she becomes an all-around player, she has the chance to become one of the best players in the league. The scary thing is she's not that far from getting to that point.
