It’s easy to wonder how different things would be if the Atlanta Falcons hired Bill Belichick last offseason. At this time a year ago, the Falcons were holding interviews with the legendary head coach and the idea of a “win-now” partnership felt like what both sides needed to rehabilitate their image.

Of course, that never happened. The Falcons hired Raheem Morris while Belichick became a television analyst. While Belichick has since agreed to become the head coach at the University of North Carolina, it seems like he still holds a grudge over his rejection by the Falcons which led to an interesting stunt during Super Bowl weekend.

Bill Belichick’s Girlfriend Proves He’s Still Bitter About Falcons Decision

Belichick was spotted with his girlfriend Jordon Hudson walking around New Orleans over the weekend. While most couples enjoy a leisurely stroll down Bourbon Street, this one was interesting as Hudson was wearing an “Atlanta Falcons Super Bowl 51 Champions” shirt.

This could be dismissed as a “nothing to see here” moment until you realize the Falcons didn’t win that game. Super Bowl 51 is known for the Falcons jumping out to a 28-3 lead at halftime before Belichick and Tom Brady orchestrated a second-half comeback that gave the Patriots a 34-28 victory in overtime.

Falcons fans see “28-3” everywhere they go but this opens a new wound at the sight of Hudson’s t-shirt. It also shows that Belichick has hard feelings after the Falcons went a different direction last spring.

Belichick would have been an “all-in” approach to last season but it probably would have resulted in a complete cleaning of the front office and coaching staff. Instead, the Falcons made a different “win now” move by signing Kirk Cousins in free agency but kept one foot in the future by selecting Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick in last April’s draft and hiring Morris from the Los Angeles Rams

The moves weren’t enough to end the Falcons’ playoff drought as they finished with an 8-9 record to miss the postseason for the seventh straight year. Belichick also had to get a kick out of the benching of Cousins, who is expected to be released by the team before a roster bonus is due on March 17.

Both sides have a right to be bitter with how the past year turned out. But Falcons brass have the chance to have the last laugh if they can build a long-term winner around Penix.
