The Atlanta Braves lost star outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. to a hamstring injury for the second time this season. It seems that the franchise is going to be extremely cautious with the star's potential return, with MLB's Mark Bowman providing the following update: "Weiss said Acuña is a “long way” from returning. Because the hamstring strain is in the same spot, the Braves will be more cautious than they were when Acuña missed nearly three weeks with the previous strain."
It is far from the update that Atlanta fans want to hear, with both Eli White and Mike Yastrzemski providing inconsistent offensive results. What appeared to be a clear area of strength heading into the 2026 season has quickly become a concerning weakness. One that unavoidably is going to lead the team to reconsider the future of Acuna and whether or not that is in Atlanta.
As harsh as this might seem, the Braves have two years of team control remaining after the 2026 season, and Acuna is scheduled to hit the market. It is hard to justify re-signing a star who has consistently missed time over the last five years.
The 2023 MVP has had two ACL tears and consistent nagging injuries that have limited his time in Atlanta's lineup. Players rarely get healthier as they age, and this makes it clear that it is very possible an extension isn't in the future of Acuna.
Braves Given Every Reason for Pause Before Handing Ronald Acuna Jr. a Second Extension
Letting a franchise player walk away with Acuna's ability is undeniably scary. However, it is just as scary to pay Acuna market value and risk the continual issues that have plagued the outfielder since the 2021 season. An inability to stay healthy is a part of the outfielder's current legacy and a reason to avoid paying the hefty price of what a second extension will likely cost.
With that said, it is important to note that there are two years remaining on the current deal, and much can change in this time. If the current struggles continue, it is very possible the team has a chance to re-sign Acuna for a more affordable deal, or the flip side, if the outfielder stays on the field and plays at an elite level, this opinion can change.
However, for the time being, there is no denying the obvious lack of consistency when it comes to staying on the field. This latest setback simply serves as a reminder that the Braves are going to be facing an incredibly difficult decision when it comes to Acuna's future.
