To say that it is desperation time for the 2025 Atlanta Braves would be an understatement. The team continues to flounder, falling further into the National League basement. If there are any possible improvements or long-term answers, there will never be a better time to find them.
This includes the shortstop position, where incumbent Nick Allen continues to fade offensively. While Allen remains an upgrade over Orlando Arcia, the Braves still aren't getting what they should from the position offensively. This is difficult to see when the majority of the team's stars are underperforming as well.
Still, the team should begin considering other options, including rehabbing shortstop Nacho Alvarez. While the prospect's 2024 debut didn't go according to plan, there is still hope Alvarez could become a long-term answer. If the infielder is able to prove himself healthy in his rehab stint, it will soon be time for Atlanta to make the move and find out exactly whether or not the shortstop could become a long-term starting option.
The Braves Must Make a Difficult Choice at Shortstop
Allen's early offensive performance and impact won't be easily forgotten even in a frustrating season. However, when the lineup is struggling at this level, you must explore every possible upgrade. This includes demoting Allen into a bench role if there is any chance Alvarez can provide a spark at the plate.
While Allen's defense and speed continue to bolster his value, these aren't the areas the Braves are consistently struggling in. The issue is a lineup that might score double-digit runs one night and fail to show up for the next three. There isn't any level of consistency in the current lineup and Allen's offensive regression isn't helping.
Surrendering an out at the position seemed worth the defense when Atlanta was still believed to have a loaded lineup. When the production fell off a cliff, this decision appears to be a part of the problem. This isn't to argue that Alvarez is unquestionably the solution, but rather that the team owes it to the clubhouse and fan base to at least find out.
If the season continues to circle the drain this is the direction the team must go anyway, trading veterans in favor of giving younger pieces opportunities. This includes promoting Alvarez with the hope that you've found a long term answer at the position.
