TheAtlanta Braves failed to add anestablished postseason starting option ahead of last month's trade deadline, despite the clear need for stability behind Chris Sale. Over the last week, this decision was exposed even further with the news that both Hurston Waldrep and Spencer Schwellenbach would undergo elbow surgery. Not only does this end their respective 2026 seasons, but it also leaves an obvious question as to whether or not they will be able to contribute anything of note next season.
Spencer Strider can be added to this list as well, with the Braves making it clear they don't expect the right-hander to return in the final month of the season. This leaves Atlanta working with a rotation of Mahle, Sale, Grant Holmes, AJ Smith-Shawver, Martin Perez, and Bryce Elder. Which of these arms is going to take the ball in a potential game two or three scenario seems to change each week.
It serves as a reminder of just how frustrating Atlanta's decision was when it came to being unable to get a deal done last month. The needed pieces in the lineup and bullpen are all in place for a World Series run with the question remaining who will step up after Sale.
