The Atlanta Falcons' 2025 fate hinges entirely on the development of a young defense and quarterback Michael Penix Jr. It is hard to gauge exactly what Atlanta is capable of until we see a larger sample size of the young quarterback. However, there is no denying there is a high level of optimism that the Falcons are getting ready to turn the page on a half-decade of irrelevance. Considering the team's current depth chart, there is one additional signing that would push this feeling even further.
Veteran pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney remains a potential signing after the free agent was released by the Panthers. Making Atlanta's roster better while stealing a former division rival makes the potential move all the more tempting. The veteran has been a valuable piece at a number of stops and would be a great secondary rushing option behind Atlanta's young and exciting rookie duo.
Atlanta Signing Clowney Would Be the Perfect Final Piece for the Falcons' Defense
Atlanta currently has a pass rushing rotation of Jalon Walker, James Pearce Jr., Leonard Floyd, Arnold Ebiketie, and Bralen Trice. Adding Clowney to this group completes the transformation and gives the team a chance at meaningful improvement at its weakest link from the 2024 season.
For Clowney, you're offered the chance to play a role for a young defense with reasonable expectations. The veteran can sit back and be used in specific pass-rushing scenarios instead of being asked to be the franchise answer. Add in playing the Carolina Panthers twice in the 2025 season, and you've got an excellent chance to avenge your release as well.
A deal makes sense for both sides and should be well within Atlanta's limited price range. It gives Walker and Pearce another valuable veteran piece to compete with and learn from. There simply isn't a downside ot the move if Clowney is willing to accept a bargain deal. Considering the fact that the veteran is still sitting in free agency, this seems a likely path. One the Falcons should actively explore as they attempt to return to contention in the 2025 season.
