Atlanta Falcons pass catcher Kyle Pitts was among a notable list of players missing the early portion of OTAs. After initially wondering if Pitts was even present, it was clarified that the pass catcher was in the building but not taking part in practice due to a foot injury. Hardly the way you want to see the frustrating player start what is a pivotal season. However, new franchise quarterback Michael Penix Jr. wasted no time covering for his teammate.

The quarterback made it clear he had worked consistently with Pitts and that "He's looking really good." It is the exact type of understated defense of a player you expect from your franchise quarterback. Even with only three starts under his belt, Penix understands the ongoing lack of production from Pitts and what an important season this will be in a contract year. Giving all the more reason to believe Penix is the answer he appeared to be at the end of the 2024 season.

Michael Penix Jr. Made the Right Decision Defending a Struggling Kyle Pitts

In only three games, Penix showed an incredible arm, touch, leadership, and an ability in the clutch. Along with how the quarterback has carried himself off the field, there is reason to believe the franchise has the answer it has lacked since pushing Matt Ryan out at the end of the 2021 season. Penix defending his tight-end plays into this opinion perfectly.

Not making a splashy statement or going over the top with his defense. The quarterback simply let the media know that while Pitts might be missing OTAs, the duo has still been putting in the work. Capping this off by talking about how great the pass catcher has looked throughout the offseason.

A solid defense that continues to give Atlanta fans a sliver of hope that the player they watched in Pitts' rookie season could still return. Three years of frustrations have left fans always looking to the next season, blaming the coach or quarterback for the lack of production.

Last year left no question that Pitts bears just as much or more responsibility, with Kirk Cousins showing the veteran zero trust. If this season is going to be any different, Pitts must earn the trust of Penix and improve a questionable motor that has held the tight end back for the last two seasons.
