Falcons denying obvious Tua Tagovailoa decision

TheAtlanta Falcons made the decisionthis week to start Tua Tagovailoa in the preseason opener while making it clear that this doesn't indicate a final decision. While there are still many reps to be played in both camp and preseason, it is fair to ignore this outlook and read the signs of the offseason and training camp. All of which unquestionably point to the fact that Tagovailoa appears destined to be in Atlanta's Week 1 lineup.

Tagovailoa has the advantage of starting experience and gives the franchise hope that perhaps he can follow in the same path as past failed first-rounders to find new life in a new landing spot. For Tagovailoa, there is the hope that Atlanta's system, as well as playing with the talented trio of Bijan Robinson, Kyle Pitts, and Drake London, will be enough to elevate the starter back to the best version of himself and give the franchise a chance to compete in an ugly NFC South.

Regardless of how it plays out, fans should take the preseason decision with the understanding that it might not be a final decision, but it adds to what has been a telling competition. The Falcons appear to favor Tagovailoa's experience, and this goes beyond just a preseason decision.

Looking at Michael Penix Jr.'s first two years in the league, there have been flashes of ability but not the consistent level of performance that the Falcons needed to put their arms around Penix as a franchise option. Baked into this as well is the regime change, with a new front office and coaching staff now in place that had nothing to do with bringing in last year's starter.

While the Falcons appear to already be heavily favoring a decision, it should again be noted that both quarterbacks have a long history of injuries. Penix is coming off a season-ending injury in the 2025 season, and Tagovailoa has dealt with a handful of serious injuries, with concussion issues putting the veteran's career in question more than once based on how often they have happened.

This leaves the door firmly ajar that both quarterbacks are going to get a shot at claiming the starting job in the 2026 season. It is hardly the development you want from Atlanta's perspective, but there is no denying the franchise willingly signed up for this injury-prone combination.

Tagovailoa needs a strong preseason start to give fans a bit of hope in the season ahead, a reason to believe the veteran is capable of turning back the clock to the best version of himself. No question, despite Atlanta saying otherwise, Tagovailoa starting the preseason continues to show that fans are watching a competition that appears decided.
