For well over a decade, Atlanta Falcons fans went into each season relying on the hope that Matt Ryan would push the team to relevance. There were consistent questions around the team's ability to win in the trenches and a frustrating lack of defensive production. However, fans remained optimistic, often based simply on the respect that Ryan garnered and understanding what the quarterback meant to the Falcons as a franchise.

Heading towards training camp and the 2026 season, Atlanta fans once again find themselves in a familiar position. There isn't a lot of reason for excitement or optimism after a quiet offseason defined by adding the former Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski and jettisoned Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Neither of these moves is exactly a compelling reason to believe that the 2026 season is going to be any different than things have gone over the last five seasons. The one thing fans have to hold onto is the hope that Ryan being in the front office and the team's primary decision-maker is going to result in meaningful change.

Change that will allow the team to have its first winning season since 2017. It has been a concerning drought, and it has been shocking to watch unfold as we are nearing a decade since the Falcons were a true contender.

Falcons Fans Can Only Hope Presence of Matt Ryan Invites Needed Change

Ryan's time in Atlanta was often defined by the quarterback getting the absolute most out of his limited roster. A theme that fans hope continues with Ryan now in a leadership role four years after the team pushed the quarterback out the door in an effort to land current Cleveland quarterback Deshaun Watson.

It started a run of frustrating quarterback decisions with Marcus Mariota, Desmond Ridder, Taylor Heinicke, Kirk Cousins, and Michael Penix Jr. all failing to meet expectations. One could argue that it was karmic justice for how the Falcons treated the best player to ever suit up for the franchise.

Regardless, there remains the hope that Ryan's return will spark a return to the early days of the quarterback. This saw Atlanta become a consistent surprise contender, with Ryan's leadership as the biggest contributing factor to what the team accomplished.

Front office decision-making is far different than lining up under center, but there should still be hope that the results are the same. No question, there is little else for Atlanta fans to put their arms around other than the return of the franchise legend.
