Falcons have to consider playing Jack Strand in Week 2

The Atlanta Falconsdidn't get many good things outof the quarterback position against the Pittsburgh Steelers, as Cooper Rush had to step in as the starter for Tua Tagovailoa. Rush looked like a QB3when his name was called uponjust days before the game, and even though the Falcons had several chances to take control of the game, it never panned out that way.

Rush didn't show the ability to put the ball in the receivers' hands, unless it was Bijan Robinson, who did almost everything for the Falcons on offense. If it wasn't to Robinson, it was either a sack, a penalty, or an incompletion. That's not going to win the Falcons any games this season, and if Rush has to play another game this season, a win may not be in the cards.

Jack Strand needs to be an option for Week 2

Throughout the Steelers game, there had to be thoughts from fans about what Jack Strand could do if he were in the game, and the Falcons might need to turn that into a reality in Week 2 if Tagovailoa or Michael Penix Jr. is unavailable.

Even though it was the preseason, Strand showed in a short time that he can make almost any throw on the field while also using his legs in need be. Every time Rush tried to avoid pressure in Week 1, it didn't end well for the Falcons' offense. If Strand was in the game, those kinds of plays might turn into something different.

Falcons have time to make a decision

After the game, head coach Kevin Stefanski noted that there was no consideration to bring in Strand at any point, and it makes sense. The Falcons wanted to go with the veteran in the situation, and even though he wasn't playing well, they were still in the game until late in the fourth quarter. If the game was a blowout, it's easy to justify putting Strand in the game.

Now, with a whole week before their next game, the Falcons have some decisions to make. The first thing they have to evaluate is whether Tagovailoa or Penix will be able to play against the Carolina Panthers. If either one of them is available, then it's easy to make them the starter. If they still need time to recover from their injuries and Rush and Strand are the only options at quarterback, they have to consider the undrafted rookie.

The last thing the Falcons want to do is be down against the Panthers with Rush in and then decide to make the switch. They should do it while they still have the chance before the game.
