Falcons have to make a splash move if they want to be contenders

For years, the Atlanta Falcons have been trying to get over the hump and make their first playoff appearance since 2018. Ian Cunningham and Matt Ryan seem to have a plan for what they want this team to look like in the present and the future, but there's still uncertainty about whether it will get them to where they ultimately want to go.

They're locked in some of their key players already this offseason, and that's just the start of building a competitive team for years to come. Unfortunately, what they have now might not be enough, and it could take some more pieces to truly be a contender in the league.

Throughout the past few years, the team has signed players here and there who can help them, such as Jessie Bates III. The safety hasbeen a game-changer in the secondary, but it's going to take more than just him to see results. Last season, the Falcons finally saw their hard work pay off on defense and were second in the league in sacks. At the same time, they still finished the season 8-9 and third place in the NFC South.

Most of the problems came from the offensive side of the ball last season, as the quarterback position wasonce again one of the weak points. It's obvious there are still some areas on the team where they can improve, and the Falcons might have to make a big move at some point if they want to be a serious contender sooner rather than later.

Falcons may need to go big-game hunting sooner rather than later

For this season alone, signing somebody who's going to be an instant game-changer is far-fetched, and they'll most likely have to wait until next offseason to do so. That means the trade market will have to be their best friend, and it wouldn't be a surprise if a star becomes available during the season.

In all honesty, it wouldn't matter which side of the ball the Falcons would make the move on, but that player has to be one of the better ones at his position, or close to it. The Los Angeles Rams have been the one team in the league to show that they don't care about picks or cap space, and it helped them get a championship in 2022. They did it again this offseason, and it's still up in the air on if their efforts will get them another trophy.

The Falcons don't have to go to the extent of what the Rams do, but they do need to understand that it might take a big move or two to really take this team over the top. As much as building through the draft and signing role players is important, getting big-time players is what changes the team's trajectory.
