The Atlanta Falcons will be heading into training camp with a few questions, and some will have to do with off the field. For the most part, the Falcons have extended some of their top offensive options this offseason, with Kyle Pitts and Drake London getting new contracts. This is good news for an offense that continues to grow, but there is still some unfinished business with one player.
Bijan Robinson is the next player who should be receiving an extension, and it might be the most important deal to get done. Along with that, it could also be the most expensive, and it wouldn't be a surprise if he reset the running back market.
Robinson has been one of the most prolific running backs in the league since being drafted, and it's hard for many players to mimic what he brings to the field. His quickness and agility, as well as his ability to line up in other places on offense, makes him a hard cover for defenses, but extremely valuable to the Falcons.
With still two years left on his contract, the Falcons could obviously wait until then to give him an extension, but it might be better to do so sooner rather than later.
The longer the Falcons wait to extend Bijan Robinson, the more they may have to pay
The Falcons already know they're going to have to break the bank for Robinson as is. Last season, he led the league in scrimmage yards and basically accounted for almost half of the team's total yards. The scary thing is that Robinson is arguably only going to get better, and with the chance of having more of an offensive responsibility this season, his numbers may look even better.
That means if the Falcons wait until after this season to sign him, they might be coming out of their pockets a lot more than they expected. They'd obviously pay the price regardless, but they might want to get ahead of things before it gets out of hand.
Another reason why the Falcons shouldn't wait to extend Robinson is because of his competition. Jahmyr Gibbs is also set for a big payday, and if the Detroit Lions are the first to do an extension with their running back, the Falcons may be forced to pay Robinson the same or even more than him. The best thing for the Falcons to do is set their own market for Robinson and let others follow.
It'll be interesting to see how things play out and how long the Falcons will wait to extend one of their key players.
