Heading into Atlanta Falcons training camp, veteran Mike Hughes is returning yet again holding onto a starting role. This is a bit of a surprise when you look back at the recent results and consider the team's far superior options in both the draft and free agency. Hughes had seven missed tackles in the 2025 season and gave up an average of 11.5 yards per reception when targeted. No question, Hughes wasn't a reliable option for what was a surprisingly productive Atlanta defense.

This was further evidenced by a PFF rating of 58.6, ranking Hughes with a group that was either replaced or viewed as non-options moving forward. With this in mind, training camp is likely going to kick off a campaign from Avieon Terrell to force the Falcons to make a difficult decision that should've been made in the 2026 offseason.

Terrell is entering his rookie season and lacks a clear starting role, with A.J. Terrell, Mike Hughes, and Billy Bowman as the clear starting options. The younger Terrell is going to easily challenge this lineup, with the obvious odd man out being Hughes if the team is forced to promote the rookie.

Having the Terrell brothers in Atlanta's starting lineup is unquestionably a reason for fans to tune in to what is going to be yet another season facing the same questions. Quarterback concerns and head coaching questions remain, but taking Hughes out of the lineup would be an undeniable win.

Falcons Corner Mike Hughes will Watch Starting Role Challenged in 2026 Training Camp

For the Falcons, the best-case scenario here is making the right but difficult decision and putting both Terrell brothers into the lineup. This allows Hughes to take on a reserve role that offers experience from the bench and a solid rotational and special teams option. It is a position that fans should keep an incredibly close eye on heading into training camp and towards the preseason.

It is clear that for some reason, Hughes is greatly valued by Atlanta's decision-makers. Despite the frustrating performance, it has been difficult for the team to find an upgrade. One that is going to become incredibly obvious as Avieon Terrell begins what will be an exciting rookie campaign.

One that won't be without its bumps, but clearly offers the Falcons another building block at the position and forces Hughes to the bench. A decision that should've already been made in what has been an underwhelming 2026 offseason.
