Former Atlanta Braves infielder Orlando Arcia wasted no time finding a new landing spot after his surprise Atlanta release. The veteran signed with the Rockies, giving the shortstop a chance to earn meaningful playing time and rebuild value. It was still an eye-popping decision with Atlanta's bench still having room for Stuart Fairchild and Luke Williams. It spoke to a franchise that has made up its mind and is ready to give Arcia a fresh start.
The veteran isn't the only former Braves infielder finding a new landing spot with Nicky Lopez signing with the Arizona Diamondbacks. It is a bit surprising Atlanta didn't attempt a reunion with the veteran defender. Lopez's tenure with Atlanta featured the best offensive production of his career. A typically below-average hitter came up clutch for the Braves and became a popular bench option. Lopez has bounced around the league since leaving Atlanta, but appears to have found a great bench role in Arizona.
Former Braves Infielder Nicky Lopez Will Continue His Career With the Arizona Diamondbacks
Lopez spent the 2023 season in Atlanta and provided surprising production as a member of the Braves' bench. It was the last season Atlanta fans hadn't dealt with ongoing offensive frustrations and had reason to believe in the team's depth. For this reason, Lopez is remembered fondly and will be a player Atlanta fans keep an eye on in his Arizona tenure.
It is a bit surprising that the Braves didn't sign Lopez to replace Luke Williams. While Lopez has extremely limited offensive upside, there is far more value in using the roster spot for the proven veteran. One possible reason for Atlanta's lack of interest could be the understanding that it would be a short-term reunion.
The Braves are not only expected to be active ahead of this year's trade deadline, but will need to make room for Jurickson Profar. The outfielder will return from suspension at the end of June. Considering the current roster, the most obvious player to face demotion would be Luke Williams, the player Nicky Lopez would replace.
With this in mind, there is perhaps an obvious reason the team opted not to continue this year's theme of reuniting with former players. Regardless, it is a fresh start for Lopez and perhaps a chance at some level of stability.
