Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Taylor Heinicke joined the Los Angeles Chargers when it became clear Atlanta was turning the page. The quarterback has a great story and had an incredible playoff moment early in his career, trading blows with Tom Brady in the wildcard round.
However, in the years since, the veteran quarterback has shown some regression and wasn't a superior answer to another former Falcons QB in Desmond Ridder. Not being able to beat out Ridder for a starting job is as damaging a statement as you can make about a quarterback. With this in mind, it is very possible the veteran quarterback's job is in jeopardy.
In limited action with the Chargers, the veteran was underwhelming and left a clear reason to upgrade behind Justin Herbert. Los Angeles attempted to do just that, bringing in Trey Lance to sit behind its franchise star. With this in mind, Heinicke is already looking at competing for the final spot and could become an easy roster cut ahead of the regular season. DJ Uiagalelei was signed as an undrafted free agent and is a clear option as the team's emergency quarterback.
Former Falcons Quarterback Taylor Heinicke is in Trouble
It makes more sense to keep Uiagalelei as your third quarterback and attempt to develop the undrafted rookie. Having Heinicke in the third role gives you a level of stability, but you understand you're not winning anything of note if he is forced into action. The third quarterback spot makes far more sense for a young, unproven piece with an unknown ceiling.
Having Trey Lance as the second option allows you this avenue without having the same level of concern if Herbert deals with an injury. For Heinicke, it is noteworthy that the Chargers have added two options to the position. This demands a great summer performance if the veteran has any hope of keeping his roster spot. Otherwise, it seems the Chargers are preparing to move on and give the franchise a better chance at winning if Herbert suffers another injury.
While Heinicke isn't likely to have a difficult time finding another depth role, it is a continued journey for the former Falcons backup, who continues to push his career in the wrong direction.
