Jeff Ulbrich deserves better from careless Falcons decisionmakers

The Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich is getting readyfor yet another uphill battlewith little hope of support from an ugly offense. Last week's performance went underrated due to the implosion of Cooper Rush demanding the attention of Atlanta fans and distracting from the fact that Ulbrich's unit limited the Pittsburgh Steelers to 13 points and could've easily allowed fewer points if they had been given any type of consistent rest from the Falcons offense.

Rush not only led an ugly Atlanta attack, but had one of the ugliest plays of the season throwing an interception to pass rusher T.J. Watt, who returned it all the way for the score to put the game away. Now, you're getting ready to face a Carolina attack that is coming off a game against Chicago where Bryce Young had over 300 passing yards and a trio of passing touchdowns in an incredibly impressive performance.

Carolina put up 37 points and did so with a level of ease that suggests they are a far better offense than many suspected. No question, Ulbrich is being put in an unfair position and the lack of urgency from Atlanta's front office to improve the position shows a lack of care that suggests perhaps this is a tanking effort.

It is important to remember all of this when evaluating Ulbrich over the course of the season and understanding what the Falcons are asking of the coordinator. Making last week's performance all the more impressive is the fac tit was accomplished without James Pearce Jr. or Jalon Walker in the lineup due to a suspension and season-ending injury.

Watching last week's game made it clear just how incredibly impressive the unit was limiting Aaron Rodgers to 13 points while understanding your offense is actively trying to put the game out of reach. Only the heroics of Bijan Robinson offered any hope of moving the ball, leading to an obvious level of concern around why the Falcons are putting so much on the shoulders of one player without finding capable quarterback play.

For Ulbrich, the recipe remains the same as you're attempting to get creative when it comes to finding ways to get to the quarterback and rotate the pieces of the secondary. This is only going to do so much due to talent limitations and the fact your offense is actively working against you.

This is important for Falcons fans to remember over the next weeks understanding Ulbrich has more than proven himself capable of leading a defense when given support and the needed pieces. Last week's results were unrealistically great making it important to credit the coach and understand the situation he has been thrown into in the 2026 season.
