The Atlanta Falcons are heading into training camp with a quarterback competition that has an undeniable leader. Everything emerging from the team's offseason appears to point toward Tua Tagovailoa having a lead over Michael Penix Jr. While there is a lot of football to be played before Atlanta makes its final decision, there is no denying Tagovailoa has the advantage of experience, and this is something that has the attention of the Falcons.
Desmond Ridder, Penix, Marcus Mariota, Taylor Heinicke, and Kirk Cousins all offered subpar play or worse, making the idea of having such an experienced starter enticing. However, the obvious counter to this is pointing out that very similar logic led to two years of Cousins messing the offense up and proving to be a huge mistake for the franchise.
Tagovailoa at least presents the advantage of being paid by the Miami Dolphins, with Atlanta bringing in the signal caller on an extremely limited deal. There is very little risk, and the page can easily be turned if injury struggles continue or last year's turnover tendencies continue to rear their head within the Falcons offense.
Leading us to consider the ceiling of Tagovailoa and what the best season looked like during his time in Miami. This was in 2023, when the Miami starter passed for 4,624 passing yards and 29 touchdowns on the season. Atlanta hasn't seen this level of production since Matt Ryan was jettisoned ahead of the 2022 season.
Falcons Have Clear NFC South Chance with Best Version of Tua Tagovailoa
This is where context is important, understanding that it has been two full seasons since Tagovailoa was this version of himself. Add in the head injuries and obvious durability concerns, and it is far from a lock that the Falcons can find the best version of the quarterback, even if he does prove himself healthy heading into the season.
What this is meant to accomplish, rather, is looking at the best version of Tagovailoa and realizing the possibility of an NFC South title if the Falcons are able to turn back the clock. There is the advantage of playing in a dome for a warm weather team, two factors that have often brought out the best from Tagovailoa.
The possibility is there that the Falcons have found a stabilizing force at the position and will make a run at the division. While there is just as good, if not better of a possibility of continued quarterback frustration, the positive possibility is far more enjoyable to consider ahead of the 2026 season. One that Atlanta fans are hoping doesn't follow a familiar theme and will offer a bit of hope.
