Dan Quinn’s Atlanta Falcons Can Handle the Heat
By John Buhler
In the words of Glenn Frey, ‘the heat is on‘ down in Flowery Branch. Though Axel Foley might look cooler in dark clothing, Dan Quinn has made a point to wear nearly all black coaching his Atlanta Falcons in the sweltering August Georgia heat. His Atlanta Falcons can apparently handle it.
In what was the hottest day of training camp so far, Dan Quinn had his men practicing in full pads for the second consecutive day. Nobody complained about the heat and I love that. It’s next-level toughness to play all out in 95 degrees and typical southeastern humidity.

For a guy that came from a temperate rain forest in Seattle, WA, to the concrete jungle of Atlanta, GA, I’m amazed that Dan Quinn doesn’t show any sign of weakness by the temperature outside. He likely told his players to give everything that they have today before an off day tomorrow.

Once you start complaining about how hot it is outside, you’ve already lost for the day. Dan Quinn cannot afford to lose a single practice from now until the regular season begins. He made a point to tell the media that the first half of yesterday’s practice in full pads was a bit unsatisfactory for his liking but the Atlanta Falcons finished the second of Sunday’s training camp session strong.
It’s days like today where you really get to see which players want it more than the rest. Do they have the mental toughness to play a physical brand of football in less-than-desirable conditions? Players like Justin Hardy, Devin Hester, and Leonard Hankerson had great days at practice according to Head Coach Dan Quinn.
Though Quinn liked Hester’s speed and Hankerson’s competitiveness, no shocker with either of the two, I thought his comments about rookie wideout Justin Hardy were exemplary. Quinn basically said that Offensive Coordinator Kyle Shanahan and his staff are trying to at what point Hardy gets overwhelmed. Essentially, what is Justin Hardy’s breaking point?

Well, they haven’t found it yet as this guy appears like a star in the making for the Atlanta Falcons. Quarterback Matt Ryan said after yesterday’s session that he is well aware of Hardy’s record-setting tenure with the East Carolina Pirates. With all the promising things I’ve heard about all five Atlanta Falcons wide receivers, Matt Ryan will have plenty of strong targets to throw to in 2015.

Apparently when the heat is on, the 2015 Atlanta Falcons rise up. Though we’re a dome team, I believe that Dan Quinn is adequately preparing the Dirty Birds to play in a hostile road environment. While I expect the Atlanta Falcons to play great ball at the Georgia Dome this fall, a playoff push stems from how well the team fairs on the road. Keep blasting music, Coach Q! Go Falcons, Rise Up!
