Dan Quinn, Falcons OTAs Day 1 Presser Reactions
By John Buhler
Atlanta Falcons Head Coach Dan Quinn met with the media after the first day of organized team activities (OTAs). It was a fairly overcast day in Flowery Branch, but Coach Quinn came away pleased with entire team’s effort in the first day of OTAs. He said that in the team’s first practice together this season, they worked on 3rd downs and 2 minute drills.

Coach Quinn said that first-round pick Vic Beasley and new free agent acquisition Adrian Clayborn had a fantastic day in these third down simulations. This is a great sign since both Beasley and Clayborn will likely be the two outside pass rushers on obvious passing situations for the Falcons this season.
The level of team participation in today OTAs was very high, with only a handful of players unable to get on to the field because of injuries, including Sam Baker and Jalen Collins. You could read between the lines but Quinn appreciated Julio Jones’ participation in the midst of contract negotiations. Julio could have easily opted to not work today until he receives a new Falcons deal, but he’s a man of high character that puts the team first. He’ll get paid before training camp I’m certain.
When asked about his hands-on approach to coaching, Quinn wants to stay authentic to his coaching style and doesn’t plan on letting up any time soon. Good news for the Falcons defense, as tackling, pass rush, and man coverage have all been issues that have needed correction for some time.
“When we become a really good practicing team, that’s when it’ll carry over into the games.” — Atlanta Falcons HC Dan Quinn
Quinn likes how receptive his players are to this new style of practice, based on speed and controlled chaos. He believes that it’s important to practice in a simulated hostile environment so that it best prepares you for tough road atmospheres. Atlanta has not played well on the road these last few seasons, especially in outdoor games.
Coach Quinn spoke highly of Devonta Freeman and says that Devonta has embraced the idea of having the best possible offseason. Players tend to progress the most from Year One to Year Two. It’s great to hear how committed Freeman is to becoming a great running back in the NFL.
OTA’s will continue in Flowery Branch each of the next three days. Let’s hope for promising weather as Coach Quinn needs to use all the time he has with the team on the field this week. Rise Up, ATL!
