DeMarcus Love: Atlanta Falcons’ New Offensive Lineman
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Falcons signed veteran offensive lineman DeMarcus Love prior to the start of the 2015 Training Camp. His signing brings the roster to 90 men at the moment. It looks like a signing to fill out depth for new Head Coach Dan Quinn, new Offensive Coordinator, and new Offensive Line Coach Chris Morgan as DeMarcus Love has yet to appear in a regular season game in his four-year NFL career.

My guess is that the Atlanta Falcons needed another option at tackle after RT Lamar Holmes ended up getting placed on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) List prior to the start of Training Camp. Love is a former 6th round pick by Minnesota Vikings in the 2011 NFL Draft after playing for He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named at Arkansas.

This is DeMarcus Love’s fifth team in four seasons. He has suited up for the Minnesota Vikings, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Denver Broncos and the New Orleans Saints, never appearing in a game for any of these four franchises. But could he compete for a roster spot on an Atlanta Falcons team looking to remake its entire offensive line?
Sure, why not. It’s not like the Atlanta Falcons are world-beaters on the offensive line which is a huge concern give who our franchise quarterback is. Please don’t get hurt, Matt Ryan! I see DeMarcus Love challenging for a roster spot with rookie OT Jake Rodgers or a spot on the practice squad if he’s still eligible.
This isn’t the highly anticipated signing many Atlanta Falcons fans expected after hearing about OT Jake Long‘s tryout and medical examination in Flowery Branch a few days ago. Nor is it a high-profile signing of a OG Evan Mathis or a OT Gosder Cherilus. But at least the Atlanta front office is addressing the offensive line issues to some degree. Bringing in one more guy fighting for his NFL life should only bolster competition once camp commences tomorrow morning.

At 6’4”, 315 lbs. perhaps DeMarcus Love can fit into Kyle Shanahan’s zone blocking scheme as a reserve swing tackle. I expect versatility to play a major factor in how Shanahan assesses value in his offensive lineman. Love should have a fair crack during training camp so long as Holmes is unable to perform in camp.
Does DeMarcus Love survive the cut in training camp for the Atlanta Falcons? I doubt it since he’s never been able to crack an offensive line rotation in his previous four stops, but you never know. Maybe it was fate to DeMarcus sign with the Atlanta Falcons and develops into a contributor in the Dan Quinn Era of the Atlanta Falcons. It’s almost here. Training Camp begins tomorrow!
