Prince Shembo: Atlanta Falcons Should Stay Away
By John Buhler
Prince Shembo, former Atlanta Falcons linebacker, was waived by the team back in May for allegedly killing his then girlfriend’s Yorkie, Dior. Even after accepting a plea for a misdemeanor in animal cruelty, it doesn’t serve his former employer, the Atlanta Falcons, to bring Shembo back to Flowery Branch.
I thought this was over. How could anybody consider bringing Prince Shembo back to the Atlanta Falcons roster? His previous actions both in Flowery Branch and South Bend are not excusable. How could the Atlanta Falcons welcome back their former 4th round pick with open arms because he said he’s sorry?

So what if the dog supposedly bit him? Nobody has the right to abuse animals. Prince Shembo didn’t even have the courage to tell his former employer that he was responsible in the death of his ex-girlfriend’s pet. The same man contemplated about fleeing the country because he was afraid that inmates wouldn’t take kindly to animal abusers.

So what if the Atlanta Falcons need help at linebacker? With all the positive things I’ve heard about the Dan Quinn Era, the Falcons don’t need this distraction to undermine what Coach Q is trying to accomplish daily in Flowery Branch.
I understand that key free agent acquisition veteran LB Brooks Reed has not had a healthy spring or summer for the Atlanta Falcons, but if Atlanta feels the need to bring in more depth at linebacker, there are dozens of other free agents out there that could help the Falcons on the field besides Prince Shembo.
The team has not even played its first preseason game yet. Perhaps the coaching of Defensive Coordinator Richard Smith and Linebackers Coach Jeff Ulbrich improves the unit enough so that Atlanta doesn’t feel the need to bring in another free agent linebacker into the mix.

Since Dan Quinn took over as Head Coach in February, the Prince Shembo incident has been the only public relations incident thus far that has had an adverse effect on the organization. The Atlanta Falcons acted swiftly and cut Prince Shembo to avoid a probable PR nightmare. Why would Arthur Blank, Thomas Dimitroff, or Dan Quinn want to bring any negative attention to their team as they try to get back into the playoffs after a two-year absence?

The Atlanta Falcons view itself as first-class organization. While there have absolutely been embarrassing moments during Arthur Blank’s 14 seasons as majority owner, the Atlanta Falcons have always found a way to get through the tough times and try to build something positive for the Atlanta region to enjoy. I don’t see Quinn or his staff that desperate for LB help entering tomorrow’s preseason game against the Tennessee Titans.
A firm ‘no’ from Thomas Dimitroff on potential interest in Prince Shembo would go a long way in dispelling any rumor off bringing back the former Falcons linebacker. If Dimitroff said ‘no’ to Ray Rice‘s services, why wouldn’t the organization pass on a man they’ve already cut from their roster due to his detrimental actions? What’s done is done. Let’s get back to feeling good about our Atlanta Falcons, Rise Up Nation. I know it’s only preseason but let’s beat the Titans at home tomorrow night.
