NFL Preseason: Around the Perimeter, Eps. 6

Good Morning, Atlanta!  You are listening to Around The Perimeter here at ATL All Day.  We have a ton of great content on our 6th episode.

In this week’s podcast, Co-Editor John Buhler and I react to the Atlanta Falcons first game in the NFL Preseason this past Friday, as the Dirty Birds were victorious over Marcus Mariotta and the Tennessee Titans 31-24. Matt Ryan displayed surgical precision during the first series, picking apart the Titans’ secondary and leading to a 13 yard TD by Julio Jones.

The front-seven also had a good game, showing improvement on the defensive end. It is becoming more clear day by day that Dan Quinn is changing the culture of the franchise, and his players are buying into his coaching philosophy. The NFL Preseason is nothing more than a schedule of glorified scrimmages but it is great to see the Falcons firing on all cylinders.

John and I then delve into the state of the Atlanta Braves season, picking a part positional battles for next. We discuss at length if Michael Bourn and/or Cameron Maybin will be a part of the team in 2016, as well as if the Braves can make an improbable comeback this season. It is looking likely that fans will have to wait until next year, as John Hart will look to add more bats to the lineup in the offseason. We also talk about the return of everyone’s favorite Aussie side-armer, Peter Moylan, and the effect he will have on the Atlanta Braves bullpen.

Not to be overshadowed by our hometown Atlanta Falcons, John and I also discuss the final score of our adopted team’s (the Jacksonville Jaguars) first NFL Preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Jags looked anything but toothless, as Blake Bortles had a great game. Perhaps he has been drinking some of Tony Khan’s fluoride-free water?

We close the program by analyzing the signing of Jason Richardson by the Atlanta Hawks this past weekend, and what it means for the veteran guard and the ball-club. Jason Richardson has always been an effective scorer and three-point threat, but has been hindered the past two seasons by knee injuries. At 34-years-old, does J-Rich have anything left in the tank? And if he does, will he be able to compete for a roster spot against Terran Petteway and Lamar Patterson? Richardson can fill the void left by Elton Brand following his retirement as a veteran presence in the locker-room, which would greatly behoove Mike Budenholzer’s squad.
