Vic Beasley To Play With More Effort Against Jets

facebooktwitterreddit

Vic Beasley turned some heads with his strong performance against the Tennessee Titans last Friday at the Georgia Dome.  Though Vic only played on ten defensive snaps, he has his heart set on playing even harder against the New York Jets in tomorrow’s second preseason game.

In his first game with the Atlanta Falcons, Vic did a nice job disrupting QB Marcus Mariota in his Titans debut by forcing an errant check-down pass right into the open arms of LB Justin Durant.  I’m happy that Vic wants to give more in his second preseason games, especially since I found his play difference-making in the Falcons’ front seven last week.

On his first game with the Atlanta Falcons, Vic Beasley stated, “I think what I learned from the first game is to finish and play with more effort throughout the game.”  He plans to build on his first game when the Dirty Birds take on the New York Jets tomorrow.  Vic later added, “I look forward to being the best player that I can be.”

  • Vic aspires to get after the quarterback, be a factor in run stoppage, and play with more effort in general in the amount of snaps he gets.  This isn’t to say that Vic Beasley is taking any plays off for the Atlanta Falcons on defense.  It has more to do with how amped up the pace of the NFL is when compared to the ACC where Vic played College Football at Clemson.

I’m glad that Vic Beasley recognizes that true mental toughness is what will ultimately get him to that elite level as a pass rusher.  Many pundits feel that Vic could actually win the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year for the Atlanta Falcons.  While there are plenty of strong defensive playmakers in the 2015 NFL Draft Class, I sense that nobody else has as big of an opportunity to turn a defense around than what Vic Beasley has with the Atlanta Falcons.

In tomorrow’s game, expect the New York Jets to run the ball a bunch for new HC Todd Bowles.  The Jets usually play their best football with a ground-and-pound running attack that compliments a stellar defensive unit.  Todd Bowles helped build a great defense in Glendale for Bruce Arians’ Arizona Cardinals the last two seasons.

I can see Vic getting his first NFL sack tomorrow night against the Jets since Gang Green has a ton of issues at quarterback.  Geno Smith is out for a while with a broken jaw suffered from a thrown punch in Jets practice.  Seeing Vic Beasley terrorize either Ryan Fitzpatrick or Matt Flynn in the Jets’ backfield sounds like a real treat for Atlanta Falcons fans.

The defense will need to build on last week’s game against the Titans before taking on two decent offensive teams in the Miami Dolphins and the Baltimore Ravens in Preseason Weeks 3 and 4.  I’m excited to see all that lies ahead for Vic Beasley and the rest of the Atlanta Falcons defense in 2015.
