44. . G. Illinois. Jon Asamoah. 75. player

Jon Asamoah came to the Atlanta Falcons during the free agency period of the 2014 offseason.  Asamoah was coming off four strong years with the Kansas City Chiefs and came to Atlanta with significant fan fare for an offensive guard.  Falcons fans expressed great enthusiasm to get an interior lineman the caliber of Jon Asamoah in free agency after a disastrous 4-12, 2013 season. I’m still amazed that Matt Ryan survived that season given abysmal play from the interior offensive line supposedly protecting him.

Asamoah was arguably the most consistent player on the Atlanta Falcons offensive line in 2014, playing right guard.  Heading into camp, I was certain that Asamoah would continue as the best offensive lineman on the team while Franchise LT Jake Matthews comes into his own hopefully this fall.

However, this has not been the case for the former Illinois Illini.  Ever since Kyle Shanahan started bringing in players familiar with his zone blocking scheme like G Chris Chester and T Tyler Polumbus, Jon Asamoah has not been a prominent feature in comments regarding the offensive line from the coaching staff.

Perhaps Jon is not a good scheme fit in the ZBS as Shanahan and Offensive Line Coach Chris Morgan opted to start Chris Chester, Mike Person, and James Stone at guard over Asamoah in the first two preseason games.  Though I wouldn’t necessarily agree with it since this year’s o-line unit has thus far proven close to nothing for me, Jon Asamoah could end up being a cap casualty after this weekend’s game if Quinn and Shanahan don’t see Jon as a great scheme fit here in Atlanta.
