Julio Jones will get $47 Million guaranteed in this new contract extension.  The news was first reported by Sports Illustrated’s Peter King.

This was a great signing by the Atlanta Falcons to lock up one of the Top 5 wide receivers in the National Football League.  Falcons Owner Arthur Blank assured the Atlanta faithful that Julio Jones would be a “Falcon for life.”

After moving up to acquire Julio Jones with 6th overall selection in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Atlanta Falcons front office needed to make sure that Jones was a long-term investment since the club gave up several crucial picks to the Cleveland Browns to get him.

  • Julio Jones publicly stated that he wasn’t going to let these contract negotiations get in the way of his commitment to his teammates and the Atlanta Falcons’ 2015 Season.  He knew how important it was to lead by example with by putting the team first and letting his agent Jimmy Sexton do the talking for him.

Jones had to learn a new offensive system under new OC Kyle Shanahan this offseason.  With veteran slot receiver Harry Douglas now in Tennessee and former Pro Bowler WR Roddy White entering the twilight of his illustrious career, this is now Julio Jones’ WR group to take full command of.

He has a Top 10 passer throwing him consistently catchable balls in Pro Bowl QB Matt Ryan.  Without the pressure of performing in a contract year, Julio Jones can finally play freely for the Atlanta Falcons knowing that he is part of the organization’s long term plans.

Julio Jones along with Matt Ryan, CB Desmond Trufant, and likely OLB Vic Beasley as the Faces of the Franchise when the Atlanta Falcons move into Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Fall of 2017.  A lot may change with this Atlanta Falcons team in the next five seasons but one thing is certain, Julio Jones will be a prominent part of it.

We knew this deal was on the horizon and I’m very happy that this did not carry into the regular season.  Julio Jones must feel pretty good about his new deal, especially the $48 Million guaranteed.  Atlanta’s front office was able to do this because they proactively extended QB Matt Ryan before the 2013 season to a 5-year deal.  It’s almost game time.  Rise Up, ATL!  Congrats on your new deal, Julio Jones!
