Atlanta Falcons Waive WR Reedy, Sign OL Lefeld
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Falcons waive Wide Receiver Bernard Reedy and opt to bring back Offensive Lineman Eric Lefeld, according to the team’s Twitter account.
The Atlanta Falcons made an interesting roster decision by letting practice squad favorite WR ‘Speedy’ Bernard Reedy in favor of having former Atlanta Falcon OL Eric Lefeld come back and compete for a roster spot.
This front office move is a little shocking to me considering how the organization has felt about Reedy for the last season plus. While the roster has to remain at or under 75 men through the rest of the week, it brings to mind two important facts about the current state of the Falcons: Atlanta is very deep at WR and conversely, very weak on the offensive line.

To me, Reedy didn’t step up for the 6th receiver spot in camp this year, as veteran WR Nick Williams has had a stellar preseason for the Atlanta Falcons and could very well make the 53-man roster. Perhaps Atlanta brings back Bernard Reedy to the practice squad after the final series of cuts.

While Eric Lefeld isn’t the marquee name the fans of the Atlanta Falcons had hoped for, at least Lefeld has some knowledge of the Kyle Shanahan zone blocking scheme from his time with the Falcons earlier in camp.
With the injuries to Jake Matthews, Lamar Holmes and Sam Baker‘s essential medical retirement, the Atlanta Falcons are incredibly weak at offensive tackle. Fans are clamoring about why Falcons GM has not signed former Pro Bowl LT Jake Long to a contract. I’m in this group.
No knock on Eric Lefeld as I’m sure he will compete admirably for the Atlanta Falcons in a familiar system, but he’s not Jake Long. Long may have had his issues with injuries over the last few years, but Atlanta passed on Evan Mathis (now with Denver) and Gosder Cherilus (now with Tampa Bay) in what were reasonable opportunities to improve their offensive line.
Perhaps the Lefeld signing is to strictly address the injury settlement given to former 2nd round pick by the Atlanta Falcons G/C Peter Konz who had a bad three-year tenure with the Atlanta Falcons. Maybe a Jake Long signing is imminent? We will never know if the ZBS of Kyle Shanahan will work in Atlanta if Thomas Dimitroff doesn’t bring in solid offensive linemen to play in it.

Players are dropping like flies up front for the Atlanta Falcons and while the signing of Eric Lefeld helps in terms of competition, Atlanta should still look at bringing in Jake Long to Flowery Branch. Matt Ryan cannot get hurt by a shoddy offensive line in 2015. He’s too good of a passer to deserve this lackluster of protection up front. Fix the offensive line, TD!
