Atlanta Falcons Trade for OG Andy Levitre from Titans

The Atlanta Falcons traded for OG Andy Levitre from the Tennessee Titans for a 2016 6th Round draft pick and a future conditional pick.

It’s no secret that the offensive line has been an area of major concern for the Atlanta Falcons this offseason.  Honestly, the Atlanta Falcons’ offensive line has not really been all that good since former Falcons OL Harvey Dahl signed with the St. Louis Rams in 2011.

With the front five still very much in flux for new OC Kyle Shanahan, the Falcons’ brass decided to make a trade with the Tennessee Titans to the Atlanta Falcons after the Dirty Birds’ final preseason game last night, acquiring OG Andy Levitre for two draft picks: a 2016 6th Round pick and a future conditional draft pick.

  • I’ve considered the offensive line to have been a major strength of Tennessee for a very long time, even after the team struggled through the Vince Young Era.  Guard has been the one position of most concern for the Atlanta Falcons this offseason.

While Chris Chester has held up in a familiar zone blocking scheme, neither Mike Person or James Stone have commanded the other spot.  Veteran RG Jon Asamoah didn’t dress out for the final Atlanta Falcons’ preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens.  Though HC Dan Quinn stated that both Asamoah and franchise LT Jake Matthews were held out from the game due to injuries (Asamoah’s hip), many speculate that Atlanta is on the verge of either cutting or trading the offensive guard.

Atlanta chose to not sign OG Evan Mathis, now with the Denver Broncos, this summer and let OT Gosder Cherilus go to division rival Tampa Bay.  While Dan Quinn has said that the Atlanta Falcons organization still has interest in former Pro Bowl LT Jake Long, Atlanta has still not adequately addressed their offensive line concerns with a marquee name.

Levitre is a 6-year NFL veteran, starting 96 career games between the Buffalo Bills and the Tennessee Titans.  His NFL experience seems like a valued commodity for Kyle Shanahan who has tried to see if either Mike Person or James Stone could command the other starting guard spot.  That has not been the case so far.

I’m not sure how familiar Andy Levitre is with the ZBS, but Atlanta could certainly use a veteran presence like his up front with so many familiar faces on the Atlanta Falcons’ offensive line either gone or recovering from injury.

I feel like the Atlanta Falcons are trying to save money on its offensive line and looking to spend it elsewhere in the future.  That’s concerning given the weapons the Falcons have on offense.  Matt Ryan deserves top-flight protection.  He’s one of the toughest players in the NFL, proven in the last two seasons basically living in his back after the pocket collapsed or the edge wasn’t set.

Maybe Andy Levitre helps the club establish something positive up front?  It seems like a more important move than bringing Eric Lefeld back to Flowery Branch earlier this week.  Lefeld made two huge mistakes at RT last night.  So perhaps that was a depth move, while the trade to get Levitre stands as a more long-term solution for the Atlanta Falcons up front.

Levitre has ten days to get ready for the season opener on Monday Night Football when the Philadelphia Eagles come to the Georgia Dome on September 14th.  Stay posted for more updates on the Atlanta Falcons’ personnel as the 53-man roster is nearing finalization.  All cuts are coming within the next 24 hours.  Rise Up, Atlanta!
