Georgia Bulldogs: Where Do Dawgs Go Without Chubb?

The Georgia Bulldogs’ star RB Nick Chubb has suffered a significant knee injury. Though it isn’t an ACL tear, where do the Dawgs go from here in 2015?

According to Georgia Bulldogs Head Coach Mark Richt, it’s “pretty safe to say” that RB Nick Chubb will be out for the rest of the 2015 College Football Season. Chubb’s mother said that Nick will have to undergo surgery in the next two weeks, but expects to make a full recovery since he tore his PCL and other ligaments in his left knee, thankfully not his ACL.

Reality is setting in that we are in the midst of worst case scenario with the 2015 Georgia Bulldogs. The one player we couldn’t afford to lose is gone, yet the season must go on. So where do the Dawgs go from here?

It’s hard to say how the team will respond in Chubb’s extended, but I hope that some underclassmen can rise to the occasion just like Nick did last year with the Todd Gurley Autograph Suspension. I think OC Brian Schottenheimer will develop an altered offensive attack that will accentuate RB Sony Michel‘s skills as he will take over the starting running back role.

Michel does his best work in space and Schottenheimer may opt to use more spread formations to get the ball in Sony’s hands on the outside. Expect Senior Keith Marshall to get plenty of carries from here on out and that Junior Brendan Douglas will start to play more in the RB rotation as the clear #3 behind Michel and Marshall.

I think the new identity of the offense will have to stem from QB Greyson Lambert, as he is now the leader of the Dawgs on the offensive side of the football. He has another year of eligibility and should use the rest of 2015 to set himself up for a spectacular Senior Season in 2016.

Chubb and Michel return next year anyway as they are only true sophomores. Lambert may need to start establishing a rapport with underclassmen in the passing game. Malcolm Mitchell is in his last season of collegiate eligibility, so will Lambert develop continuity with Reggie Davis, Terry Godwin, Jeb Blazevich or Jackson Harris?

Georgia isn’t a run first team anymore in 2015, so let’s embrace what is a lost season as an opportunity to open up the playbook of OC Brian Schottenheimer. Lambert showed us on Saturday that he can deliver a solid deep ball without throwing interceptions. He only has one in 2015, so let’s see what Greyson Lambert can do in a more spread offensive attack. I think we’ll like the results, honestly.
