Terry Robiskie becomes Titans offensive coordinator

Terry Robiskie will leave the Atlanta Falcons organization to become the new offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans for the 2016 NFL season.

The Atlanta Falcons will need to find a new wide receivers coach as long-time wide receivers coach Terry Robiskie will leave Flowery Branch in favor of an offensive coordinator position with the Tennessee Titans on Mike Mularkey‘s staff in 2016.

Robiskie had been the Atlanta Falcons’ wide receivers coach since 2008 when he came to Atlanta as a part of Mike Smith‘s first coaching staff. Terry Robiskie has been a top-notch wide receivers coach for over 30 years with the Atlanta Falcons, the Miami Dolphins, the Cleveland Browns, the Washington Redskins, and the Los Angeles Raiders organizations.

This will mark the third time that Terry Robiskie will assume an offensive coordinator role with an NFL franchise. He was the offensive coordinator for the Raiders from 1989 to 1993 and the Browns in 2004.

More from Atlanta Falcons

He was one of three assistant coaches that head coach Dan Quinn kept from Mike Smith’s 2014 staff along with special teams coordinator Keith Armstrong and defensive line coach Bryan Cox.

This is no doubt a tough loss for the Atlanta Falcons franchise, as the team was one of the better receiving teams in the NFL during the Mike Smith era in Flowery Branch (2008-14). Robiskie will join what was the worst team in the NFL in the Tennessee Titans, who finished with a 3-13 record in 2015 and have the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

It seemed like the Atlanta Falcons were going to lose a key member of their 2015 staff at some point this offseason. Special teams coordinator Keith Armstrong’s name was circulating as a potential replacement on his college teammate Todd Bowles‘ staff with the New York Jets. Armstrong will again stay in Atlanta in 2016, as the Falcons prevented him from interviewing for the Jets’ opening, citing that the Falcons had Armstrong under contract for two more seasons.

Defensive backs coach Marquand Manuel did interview for the defensive coordinator position with the Jacksonville Jaguars and does have a strong working relationship with Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley from their time together with the Seattle Seahawks.

However when the interim tag came off Titans head coach Mike Mularkey earlier this week, it seemed possible that Mularkey would bring a familiar face with him to become his offensive coordinator in Tennessee in 2016. Mularkey and Terry Robiskie worked together on the Atlanta Falcons’ 2008 to 2011 staffs when Mike Mularkey was the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons.

This is Mularkey’s third NFL head coaching opportunity and likely his last. He previously was the head coach of the Buffalo Bills (2004-05) and the Jacksonville Jaguars (2012). Mularkey was the interim head coach of the Tennessee Titans for most of last season after former head coach Ken Whisenhunt‘s release.

While it is great that Terry Robiskie gets another opportunity as an offensive coordinator, it does hurt the Atlanta Falcons’ passing game as he had been such a strong teacher for the last eight years in Atlanta. Expect offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan to bring in somebody he has a strong working relationship to become Terry Robiskie’s replacement as wide receivers coach in 2016.
