The Atlanta Dream are on a mini-break right now as the FIBA Women's World Cup takes place. Before they went on break,they got a big winagainst the Minnesota Timberwolves, and now they're No. 4 in the WNBA standings. They also made a key addition in that same week, signing DeWanna Bonner after she agreed to a buyout with the Phoenix Mercury.
In what could possibly be her last chance at competing for a championship, Bonner wanted to go to a team that could give her an opportunity to win, and the Dream felt like the perfect situation. With Brionna Jones' health still in question, it made sense for the Dream to land a player of Bonner's caliber, and she could help the team on and off the court.
DeWanna Bonner can help on and off the court
She might have been one veteran that they need, especially with her experience winning a championship. The Dream's core of young players are still quite young, and they need someone around who can help them to get through this final stretch of the season going into the playoffs.
For the past three years, the Dream have been knocked out of the first round of the playoffs. Last season felt like their first real chance they had at advancing, with the Indiana Fever being injured, but they ended up losing in three games. This time around, the Dream are stilltrying to fight for playoff positioning, and it's uncertain who they could possibly face at the moment.
From the No. 4 seed to the No. 8 seed, there's less than two games separating all of the teams, and the standings have a chance of looking different every day toward the end of the season. That's why imperative that the Dream close out the season strong, and they have Connecticut Sun, Chicago Sky and New York Liberty twice in their final four games.
The Dream can rely on DeWanna Bonner down the stretch
Bonner already showed in her one game with the team that she could be a key piece off the bench, and they'll need her to continue that to end the season. Her shooting ability still allows the Dream to stretch the floor, and her IQ is good to where she can make plays for her teammates. The Dream already had one of the best frontcourts in the league, and adding Bonner will only make them better.
With the playoffs not too far, Bonner could be one of the players the Dream leans on, and they can try to help her win another championship.
