The Atlanta Dream were quiet at the trade deadline, and it's probably not a surprise when looking at their current roster. The starting five might be one of the best in the league, and getting Brionna Jones back before the All-Star break could be seen as their big acquisition before the deadline.
They've also been winning a lot over the past few weeks, and the organization may have felt content with the roster they have heading into the second half of the season. Though that could've been the case, there were still rumors floating around that the Dream had interest in All-Star guard Kelsey Plum.
Plum had been in trade rumors after reports stated she wouldn't re-sign with the Los Angeles Sparks at the end of the season. From there, it was no doubt that teams would be interested in her services, especially with her having a career season. In the end, the Phoenix Mercury walked away with Plum, and the hope is that she can help them make a playoff push this season, while also re-signing with them in the offseason.
Adding Plum to the Dream would've been another huge move for the team after trading for Angel Reese in the offseason, but it was for the best that they didn't make that move.
Adding Kelsey Plum would've been a risk for the Dream
Plum would've undoubtedly given the Dream another shot creator that they need, but it would've been at the cost of several of their players. There's a chance that players such as Jordin Canada and others would've been a part of the deal, and for a team that already doesn't have much certainty surrounding their depth, it would've been a risk trading for Plum.
On the other hand, guard is one of the areas where the Dream aren't lacking depth, and they may want to keep it that way for the time being. There are other places where the Dream could've improved the roster, and it wasn't the guard position.
Just like any team that Plum was getting traded to, there would also be uncertainty about whether she would re-sign with the Dream at the end of the season. Things would have to go right on and off the court for her to make that commitment, and looking at the Dream roster, there wouldn't be much doubt she'd re-sign. At the same time, you just never know what a player is thinking.
The Dream know this is the team they'll have to ride with for the remainder of the season, and they unquestionably have the pieces in place to make a run.
