Atlanta Falcons: Around the Perimeter, Eps. 7

Good Morning, Atlanta!  You are listening to Around The Perimeter here at ATL All Day.  We have a ton of great content on our 6th episode.

In this week’s episode, guest commentator Nathan Carl Johnson joins the program to discuss the Atlanta Falcons and the NFL Preseason. During the segment, Co-Editor John Buhler, Carl and I talk about how the Atlanta Falcons performed on Friday night in their preseason game against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. We are all surprised and excited about the play of the defense thus far in the preseason, and how Dan Quinn’s new scheme seems to rubbing off on the Falcons’ players.

Justin Durant and the linebacker core have been especially solid, as Brooks Reed and Paul Worrilow have been swarming to the ball. Of course, the first-team offense was nearly flawless on Friday for the Atlanta Falcons, as Matt Ryan was nearly perfect, and Julio Jones was able to capitalize on a mis-read by the Jets for a touchdown.

Carl, John and I also discuss the implications of the injury to both Jordy Nelson in Green Bay and Kelvin Benjamin for Carolina. With Nelson down, will the Packers find it more difficult to compete in the NFC North and the NFC? With Benjamin (arguably the Panthers best receiver) lost for the season, has the door opened for the Atlanta Falcons to become the favorites in the NFC South and win the division? We think that it has.

John and I also talk to Carl about the current state of the Atlanta Braves, who are coming back to Turner Field this week licking their wounds after getting swept in a four-game set by the Chicago Cubs and having lost seven consecutive games. At this point, the only reason to keep watching the Braves this season is to get a glimpse of the future — especially in September when rosters are expanded. We will have a chance to see players like Mallex Smith and Tyrell Jenkins, and at least have some level of optimism going into 2016.

Carl, John and I also compare

Joe Maddon

and

Fredi Gonzalez

and the jobs they have done with their respective teams this season. Maddon has an even younger club than the Braves, but has them contending for a playoff position; while Fredi Gonzalez’s club continues to struggle and he seems to continue to mismanage his young pitchers (in our humble opinion).

In Part 2 of Around the Perimeter, we close the the program by discussing some Atlanta United FC soccer with Staff Writer Ian Thomas. Ian talks about the importance of the newly announced youth academy in Atlanta, and its significance in developing young and talented players for the club. John, Ian and I also discuss the impact that Darren Eales and his experience in the EPL will have in Atlanta, and how that could potentially translate into a well constructed club that could maybe attract star players in the future.
